Hit and Run

Part One

I can't remember exactly how it happened, but I will always remember the look on 's face as she fell to the floor.

We were on our way to a Blue concert (our favorite pop group) and were chatting and giggling about a TV appearance the lads had done earlier that day.

"I can't Believe how gorgeous was looking!" exclaimed with a cheeky grin on her face.

"What! You mean don't you?!" I pretended to be annoyed. I couldn't hold my straight face for long though and we both burst out in a fit of giggles.

It was just something we did. One of those strange best friends things.

We were too busy laughing at something - I forget what it was, something silly. When all of a sudden I heard a loud screeching noise and turned to see a dart of shock and fear cross 's face. She looked me straight in the eyes and I watched her slowly fall to the floor.

I just froze. I couldn't move. I couldn't think. I remember hearing a man say something about an Ambulance. Then I awoke to see my Mum over me. I looked at her and she smiled at me. For that split second everything seemed OK,then my memories began to return.

"?" I mumbled. I had to know what had happened. Where was she? Was she OK? My Mum just forced a weak smile. "Everything's all right now baby. You've lost a bit of blood but you're going to be fine." Blood? Me? What? I wasn't hurt. What is she talking about?

"" I mumbled again my voice trailing off as a wave of sleepiness came over me.

"Shes fine." My Mum replied. Why did I get the feeling she was lying? "Now you just get some rest. Ok?"

I must have lost consciousness again as the next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital ward with my Mum asleep in the chair next to my bed. I looked across at her. What had she been talking about before? I remembered her saying something about me losing blood. I felt so confused and my head was aching. It was that had been hit.

I put my hand up to my aching head and my fingers touched something soft that was wrapped around my head.

"Dont touch your bandage dear," my mum said from the chair, she must have just woken up.

"What happened?" I asked her. I needed to know.

"You were in an accident." She replied, it looked as though that was where she was going to stop.

"Please mum. I have to know." I pleaded with her as the pain began to increase in my head.

"It was a hit and run. You were crossing the road when a car came out of nowhere. was hit first, a fraction of a second before you were, she took most of the impact. There where 4 witnesses who saw the whole thing. They called for an ambulance. I dread to think what would have happened to you if theyd not been there."

"And ?" I asked dreading the answer.

"Shes stable." My mum replied.

"Stable?" I asked. Wasnt that what they said when you werent dying at that moment but they didnt know if you would?

"Yes shes in a coma. But the doctors are hopeful, so theres no need to worry."

I was able to leave my bed later that day and go and see . She just looked as though she was sleeping.

A day went by she didn't wake, 2 days and she still slept, 3, 4, and 5 days and she still lay there.

After a few days I was able to go home. My injuries hadnt been serious, theyd had to replace some of my lost blood but apart from that and the headache I was fine.

I visited at the hospital every day, but soon the days became weeks and the weeks became months and she was still in the coma. The doctors became less hopeful and I became more depressed. I sometimes blamed myself, if only Id been paying more attention. But if only were pointless and I knew deep down no one was to blame. Visiting had become a routine. Like having a shower or eating a meal. It was something you did everyday without even thinking about it. I would stop by after college and read her articles from magazines and newspapers to keep her up to date on what was going on in the world. I didnt know if she could hear me, but they say a person in a coma sometimes can and it made me feel as though I was helping. I would also bring my Walkman in and play her Blue songs; I even bought her the new single so that when she woke up she wouldnt have missed it.
