The dream. It’s so vivid and real. I wake sweating, my body convulsing in fear as the tears begin to stream down my face. Could it be guilt? Possibly but I had lost my conscience a long time ago. I had realised that in the wrestling game having a conscience meant you had a weakness. In life, having a conscience meant you had a weakness. But the dream, it was constant. Every night it was the same thing, falling asleep with great difficulty only to be awoken by the horrors of my subconscious mind. I tried to let go of my past, tried to forget about it and move on but it haunted me every night when I tried to sleep. Gandhi once said ‘those with the greatest awareness have the greatest nightmares.’ But the dreams don’t come true? Do they?

Scene 1 – The Dream

Kendell ran as fast as she could as the rain came crashing down around her, her long blonde hair falling limp against her face. Her make up dripping down her cheeks, the mascara running in trails down across her tear stained face. Her body clad in the white silk of a wedding dress as her bare feet hit the wet pavement. Looking over her shoulder she could see the silhouette of a man, moving fast towards her. She could feel the panic well up in her heart as if it where going to explode. She wasn’t sure who the man was or what he wanted with her but she knew that if he reached her, if he caught her then everything would come crashing down around her. A whisper on the wind only intensified the terror.

You let me die.

Like the flick of a switch the scene had changed, she was no longer running along the pavement away from a mysterious man but now she stood in a room lit by candles. She stood still and confused, still dressed in the wet wedding dress, a pool of water forming on the marble floor beneath her bare feet. The orange glow of the candles barely illuminated the room. She stood for a second, confused as she tried to catch her breath before feeling a hand on her shoulder.

Eli Keaton: “You let him die.”

Kendell turned and looked in to the cold eyes of Eli Keaton who stared back at her, an evil smirk across his cruel face. He stared into her blue eyes knowingly, looking into her soul, amused by her obvious fear and confusion. The orange glow of the candles danced along one side of his face as he laughed. She went to pull away from him but he had a grip on her, she couldn’t move away from him no matter how hard she tried she was stuck standing beside him. He continued to laugh amused by her struggle.

Eli Keaton: “Don’t fight it.”

A bright light filled the room, almost blinding. She tried to shield her eyes from the light, which enveloped her. She covered her eyes with her hands trying to block the light until it faded.

Open your eyes.

She took her hands away from her eyes realising that familiar faces surrounded her. The eyes of Icon, Eli Keaton, Kara, Ricky Stanton, BJ, Erica Rose and James Magnum stared at her as she stood in the middle of their circle. She fell to her knees in the middle of them all as they began to laugh Eli Keaton stepped forward.

Eli Keaton: “I have what you want.”

She looked up at him from her knees while he placed his hand on her shoulder. She looked at his hand on her shoulder and noticed that blood was dripping from his hands down her white wedding dress. The circle began to close in on her as the fear took over her body. She looked around at the circle of people each person had blood stained hands. She looked down at her own hands which where also stained with blood. She tried in vain to wipe the blood off on her dress, panicking when she realised it wouldn’t come off. Terrified she began to cry as the blood on her hands began to creep up her arms. Again she felt the hand on her shoulder she looked up expecting to see the face of Eli Keaton. Staring back at her was the face of her dead Fiance.

Kendell: “Marc… help me!”

Eli Keaton stepped up behind him laughing.

Eli Keaton: “You can’t escape your destiny…”

She looked up at Marc for help as he continued to stare down at her smiling before leaning forward and putting his lips against her ear…

Marc: “Wake up…”

Scene 2

Kendell sat in the dark room with the radio on and a bottle of coors in her hand. She glanced across the room at the clock, which informed her that it was indeed well past her bedtime. Another night of nightmare induced insomnia had forced her to get up and come into the living room. She had decided it would be pointless to lie in bed staring at the ceiling, especially with Jeff talking in his sleep on the floor beside her about Tom Selleck and why condoms make his balls itchy. She took a deep breath and leaned back in her chair. Nothing she was doing had worked. She had even gone to see a dream specialist in hopes of getting a good night sleep but it was all in vain. Nothing she did helped her sleep at night, she had resorted to watching James Magnum’s promos on television in hopes that they would put her to sleep but even that didn’t work. It was all getting on top of her and she was dealing with it the only way she knew how. She brought the bottle of Coors to her lips and downed the remainder, shaking it afterwards to make sure there was nothing left in it. When she realised it was empty she dropped it on the floor with the rest and picked up another, banging it off the edge of the table so that the top came clean off.

Jeff: “Why are you up so late?”

Jeff walked in from the bedroom in a pair of boxer shorts with Ricky Stanton’s face printed on the crotch. He wiped the sleep from his eyes and grabbed a bottle from the cooler Kendell had sitting beside her on the floor.

Jeff: “Jesus Kendell you look like shit.”

Kendell looked at him and frowned.

Kendell: “Yea well that’s probably because I’ve had about twelve hours sleep in two weeks. I keep having that nightmare I was telling you about.”

Jeff: “The one about Eli Keaton?”

Kendell: “Yep…”

Jeff: “Where he’s trying to stick it in you from behind but you escape?”

Kendell: “…. No…. The other one.”

Jeff: “Oh that one. You need to chill with the dreams. You’re turning into fucking Martha Steward.”

Kendell: “What? That doesn’t make any sense!”

Jeff: “Think about it!”

Kendell and Jeff stared at each other in silence for a minute. Kendell shook her head.

Jeff: “So are you all ready for your match against half the roster this Sunday?”

Kendell: “Yea I guess, as ready as I can be. I haven’t been out of the gym all week. Don’t want to fuck up my chances.”

Jeff: “Oh… well you should have the advantage since the rest of them are pretty much intellectually challenged.”

Kendell: “I don’t know Jeff, these people tend to go all out at PPV to try and beat me, especially when it comes to title shots. They’d kill their mother to get at me out there in the ring. As much as my superiority complex tends to get the better of me I don’t like to underestimate my opponent. It’s the hurdle most people fall at, the hurdle many an opponent has falling at in regards to me.”

Jeff: “Well is this the first time I’ve seen a glimpse of modesty in you Ms. Smith? Usually tooting ones own horn is a forte of yours I’m surprised at the negative feeling towards the whole thing.”

Kendell: “Well without being big headed Jeff, I know how great I am and I know I’m better than anybody else in that ring but sometimes talent doesn’t always matter, sometimes you just need luck on your side and lately I feel like luck has fucked off and left me the face the music alone. I mean there’s three very capable women going to be in that ring but they’re capable of holding midcard gold, then there’s James Magnum, the man who insists he is the one to beat me even though he never has, people like him are all mouth and you don’t win gold with your mouth.”

Jeff: “Fuck, if that’s you trying not to be big headed I’d love to see what you’re like when you’re being egotistical.”

Kendell: “You know what I mean. It’s not cockiness it’s confidence. I know what I have to do to win that’s all and it’s something I’ve been working at for a long time. If I could fucking sleep I’d be on top of the World.”

Jeff: “If I’m to be honest I’m surprised a lot of those people are even in this match. I mean how many times does James Magnum have to be made a fool of before he goes away and as for BJ well that girl is on her back inside the ring almost as much as she is outside the ring.”

Kendell laughed, she knew he was trying to cheer her up with his random remarks but there was little truth in them. James Magnum nor BJ where the type of people to lay down in the ring and Kendell was very aware of it.

Jeff: “Well do me a favor then, kick Magnum in the nuts for me. A man like him shouldn’t be allowed to plant his seed only men as good looking and charming as myself should”

Kendell: “I’d say the alcohol has killed off your chances of procreation.”

Jeff: “Meh…”

With an apathetic shrug he sat back in the chair and continued to drink his bottle.

Kendell: “I have nothing personal against any of the people I’m stepping into the ring against on Sunday, in fact I’m quite fond of Ricky Stanton. It’s simply business, I like to win, I like to be the best. It’s nothing personal against an of them, they’re probably really nice people but I don’t mingle with the competition.”

Kendell stood up from the chair. She needed to get out of the hotel room for a while. Everything had been so intense lately, she felt like she was carrying the World on her shoulders.

Kendell: “I gotta get out of here for a while.”

Jeff: “It’s 2am!”

Kendell: “I just… I need some air.”

Jeff shrugged and continued to drink his beer. Kendell walked across the room grabbing her coat from the coat hanger and put it on, pulling it tight around her she opened the hotel room door and began walking. She wasn’t sure where she was going or what she planned to do she just knew she had to get out of the room for a while and sort her thoughts. The pressures of it all where starting to take their toll on her. She felt confused, depressed but worst of all she felt helpless. Nothing she tried, nothing anybody tried was helping her out of this rut she had landed herself in. She walked until she came to a bench just outside the hotel. With a long sigh she sat down, breathing in the cold night air. She closed her eyes and leaned her head back dipping her hand into her jacket pocket. She opened her eyes slowly and looked down at her hands opening her fist to reveal a small gold pendent. She flicked it open and smiled. It was her good luck charm. She had gotten it as a present, a picture of her and Marc stared back at her.

I’m sorry.

She tried to bring it everywhere with her, never letting her forget the only man that had held her heart. She ran her finger over the picture, another long sigh escaping her red lips. A noise behind her caused her to jump and turn around.

Nobody there.

The street where empty without a soul in sight. She felt her pulse quicken but decided she was over reacting. Probably just a cat going through the bins she thought to herself. She turned her attention back to the picture as tears began to roll down her face.

I miss you so much.

She lifted her hand to her eyes and wiped away the tears. She had bigger things to worry about Sunday night would change her life forever.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

She was beautiful there was no denying it. Every move she made, every breath she took had a certain elegancy to it. Her long dark hair was like spun silk, her full lips as red as blood and her beautiful blue eyes where a window to her heart. It never failed to take his breath away. From the first moment he laid eyes on her he knew she was something special. She wasn’t like anybody he had ever met before. She had a certain spark, something that set her aside from every other woman he had ever come across. She was a star, born a star, raised a star. It had been months since he had last saw her and now as he stared upon her face again it still took his breath away.

Kendell Smith you haven’t changed in the slightest.

He watched as she left the hotel. He hadn’t expected to see her here. He ducked into the shadows as she passed him by, the smell of her perfume filling his senses as he closed his eyes. She was so close to him, he just wanted to reach out and touch her but he knew he couldn’t. It broke his heart as he watched her pass him by, not even knowing he existed. Without consideration he began to walk slowly behind her watching as she walked out of the hotel. He wondered where she could be going at this late hour he had never known her to be a night owl. Curiosity got the better of him as he began to follow out of the hotel onto the street.

She looks so sad.

The look on her face reflected the sadness he had seen in her eyes the last time they where face to face. As he walked slowly behind her he began to feel like some kind of stalker in the night, ducking into the shadows so she wouldn’t see him but he knew now was not the time, it wasn’t the best time for either of them. He didn’t want her walking alone in the early hours of the morning, it was dangerous and he still felt somewhat that it was his responsibility to keep her safe. He continued to walk behind her until she took a seat on a bench. Ducking into a doorway behind her he watched as she sat down and put her head back closing her eyes.

She’s beautiful.

He watched as she dipped her hand into her jacket pocket, his eyes taking in every single move she made. It had been so long. The moonlight glistened across the gold pendent she held in her hands he watched as she opened it up. He knew exactly what the pendent was. He knew everything about her. He made sure he never forgot. He watched as tears began to fall down her face. He cringed as he felt his heart hit the floor. He hated seeing her so sad. It took all his energy not to go to her, to tell her everything would be alright, to tell her that things will get better but it would have to happen all in good time.

Soon Kendell.
