"Hi, AJ," Sophia greeted. She kissed his cheek in a friendly, cheery way.
"Hi, Soph. You comin' to the wedding with me?" He wheeled his chair to face her.
"Yeah, I guess." She yawned softly. After all, she'd only gotten four hours of sleep and it wasn't even passed noon yet.
After a critical stare, AJ pierced his lips. "I swear I've met you somewhere before..."
For a moment, she looked scared, as if she was hidng something. But she smiled, friskily, with a come-back. "I'm the woman of your dreams, babe."
AJ sat next to her on the couch. She brushed her lips again his. The phone rang. Sophia kissed him again and got up. "I'll go get it, stay put."
Sophia padded to the kitchen. "Hello?"
"Sophia?" Nick exclaimed, bewildered. "What the hell are you doing over there?"
"Hi, Nick," she greeted, softly, "congratulations with your n---"
"Don't give me that bull shit. I swear if you hurt AJ, too..."
"Nick, I've changed. I swear." She paused. "Besides, AJ's special to me."
"That's what you said about me when we were dating..." He shook his head, furiously. "Before you cheated on me."
Sophia sighed. She knew he'd never let it go. He had good reasons for it.
Nick and she had been good friends years before. Everyone thought they were perfect for each other. Nick even got his parents' approval. And BJ's, who was always very cynical about the girls he dated. But two years into the relationship, disaster hit.
"Nicky, I'm really sorry. I was young and naive. I did love you. I still do."
"I can't let go. You were the world to me. You knew everything about me. You scarred me." He paused to make sure she didn't hear how he swallowed the knot in his throat. "AJ is different. He's great and I won't let you do anything to him."
"Nick, I don't know what I can do to prove to you that I'm different. I'm not playing around."
Nick sat down in a nearby chair. He couldn't let her hurt him. As much as he despised AJ, for all the shit AJ did to Nick, he knew that...witch's game. All too well.
Kevin gave a quick kiss and a large hug to his mom before he left. He needed to move on, fly solo.
He was twenty-eight, for God's sake. He wasn't married, he hadn't dated in months --- perhaps years. It had been such a blur, who was counting anymore?
One girl, Kevin recalled, took his breath away. She always made him feel good. They'd dated before, but his schedule got in the way. She understood perfectly. But they hadn't communicated in years.
Kevin pulled up to a lonely pay phone and punched in a few numbers. A "brr-ring", then someone picked up. "Temprence?"
A lulled hush of silence. "Is this who I think it is?" she squeaked, excitedly. "My Davy Crockett?"
Kevin grinned. "Hi, I haven't talked to you in ages," he said, "it's been awhile." Kevin rubbed his head.
"You in the area or is this racking up my bill?" she chided playfully.
"I'm not far. Mind if I stop by?" he asked, politely.
"No, please, you're always welcome over here."
Kevin smiled, graciously. "Alright, Sweets, see you soon. Bye."
Temprence hung up the phone and leaned against the wall. She missed him so much. But so much had happened in her life over the past four years. She even got married. That she planned to tell him. Later, when he was right there next to him.
Kevin was soon surrounded by familiar sights. Joe's Tavern, the Cavern, Fiddler's Creek --- That was a place he would remember.
Fiddler's Creek was considered make-out central. But it was where Kevin met Temprence. She'd been dumped by her last boyfriend, a real asshole. She was crying at Kevin's special spot. Kevin's spot was on top of a cliff, overlooking the peaceful, and the infamous Fiddler's Creek. It was his spot where he cried for hours on ends about his father, or just to stay away. It was his spot, no one ever knew about it. And it was invaded.
At first, he was mad. Why was this girl in his spot? His secret spot that no one ever found him. He went to approach her, but heard her snifflings. He went up to her, and asked her. From there, it sparked. It was also their first kiss site. Another thing that he wouldn't dare forget.
Memories flooded through his head like raindrops rushing through a gutter in a storm.
As if the simile couldn't be used better, rain poured down. Not in a depressing way, though. In a --- cleansing sense. Kevin cracked open the window and took a breath of the muggy atmosphere. Wonderful.
Kevin pulled up in Temprence's driveway. He forgot his umbrella and got out. The drops fell on him, calming him. He closed his eyes, arms wide. The sweet rain continued to fall.
"Gonna come in anytime soon, Mr. Crockett?" Temprence watched him and smiled. He was the same old appreciative Kevin. God, he was still the same.
