| chapter eighteen |

Howie let her in. Sophia walked slowly, warily. She saw Howie, AJ and Kevin who were obviously uptight. Nick was standing up, ruffling his hair. And Brian, who was crying.

AJ pulled up a chair for her and she sat down. Without looking at anyone in particular, she said, "I'm sorry."

"I should be apologizing," Brian said, between pathetic sobs. "Sophia, if I knew what I was doing, I wouldn't have done it."

"It's all right, we both didn't know," she said, more to herself.

"You really are just gonna let it go like that?" Nick exclaimed.

"I can't just say it was his fault, Nickolas! It takes two, y'know?" Sophia retorted.

The way she said his name was so despising, like he was lower than scum. And the name. Nickolas. It was so formal, like they just met.

Nick didn't say anything.

"I have a confession to make." It was Howie.

Questioning face put their attention to him.

"I came home that night and accidentally saw them...y'know..." he confessed.

"You saw us?" Sophia echoed his words.

Howie nodded.

Nick threw up his hands. "Well, shit! Is there anything else anyone wants to add? Maybe AJ does!"

"Actually, I do," AJ admitted. "I haven't held her past against her. Just because she made one mistake, doesn't mean she'll do it again."

"Remember to say that speech at your divorce testimony," Brian muttered.

"Brian? Not everything need a smartass comment after it, okay?" AJ shouted. "This is so fucking childish! We've messed up our careers because of something personal!"

"We need to settle this now. We can't just let this go on forever," Kevin pointed out softly.

Everyone thought silently. No one had a clue.

Little did they know someone was watching them. He pulled out his phone and punched a few numbers. "Don, I've got a story for you!"
