| chapter nine |

"Sweetie, wake up," Nick said to Katherine, killing the egnition of the minivan. He lightly shook her. Her eyes fluttered open.

"I'm so cold," she declared.

Nick got out of the minivan, opened Katherine's door and slipped his coat over her. He grabbed their bags and led her to the large cabin.

It was surrounded by giant trees dusted with white powdered snow. The cabin was dark brown and had several windows. There was a hill on the cabin's right, and attached to the cabin was a walkway hanging over the decline of the hill.

Nick pulled out a small silver key and unlocked the wooden door. A gust of warm air blew out as they walked in.

The inside of the cabin was larger than the outside. Katherine would have gone outside to check, but the weather was still bitter.

"What do you think?" he said with a grin.

"It's large. We have food?"

"The previous owner stocked it for me, I sent him a check for the fee."

Katherine nodded and scoped out the house. To the left was a fireplace, a plush couch and a few tables surrounding it. A TV sat to the side of the fireplace. The right side was a painfully gigantic kitchen with stove, fridge, oven...everything.

Katherine felt compelled to check out the bedrooms. There were four rooms.

"You have a room preference?" Katherine asked.

"You can take the last one of the right, it's the best one. I'll be in the next room."

Katherine walked into the room. A large bed was against the far wall. It looked cozy with several festive pillows. To the immediate left was a door leading into a walk-in closet and farther down, closer to the bed, was a large oak desk. To her right, another door and a bedside table.

Katherine felt a seductive wave of hot air on her nect and the faint sound of low breaths. "Were you planning to live here?" She turned around and saw Nick with a sweater in his hands.

He put it on her and took a deep breath. "I wanted to, but it's never going to work. I figure this will last a week or two." He nodded his head to the door on the right. "It connects our rooms. So in case you need something, just give me a holler."

Katherine rolled her eyes and groaned. She opened the connecting door and rifled through Nick's bag. She brought out a white t-shirt and boxers.

Nick stared at her, confused. "What?"

She said, "My dad and Mary always said that. They didn't mean it. It's like saying 'have a nice day.' They don't get a rat's ass what happens to me."

Nick opened his mouth to reply, only to close it and turn around. Katherine changed into his clothes. When she finished, he turned back around and answered her.

"I really meant it."

She nodded. Katherine marveled at the sincerity in his voice.

"Well, I'd hate to ruin such a lovely chit-chat, but I have to sleep. I'm really a better conversationalist then."

He smiled and disappeared into his room.
