| chapter eight |

Hours later, when the plane landed in blustery Canada, Nick and Katherine were grabbing their bags.

"So, where are you going?" Katherine asked casually. AS if escaping to another coutnry was nothing big.

"I bought this cabin out in the country a while back." Nick stopped to look out the window. Flurries of snow were beating down. "It's snowing like hell. Where are you going?"

"I don't know. I'm screwed. My flight was to Australia and I missed it. So I have light clothes."

Nick sized her up. "What you're wearing will last you three days. That's enough time for shopping."

Katherine picked up her bags. "Well, I should go now. It was nice meeting you, Nick Carter." She stuck out a free hand.

He picked it up and kissed it gently. "The pleasure was all mine."

She blushed and walked off quickly. Secretly, she wanted to go with him, to be warm, but instead called a cab. Twenty minutes it would take. Longer, if the weather continued its furious pattern.

Katherine sat down on a bence right next to the main entrance. She was shivering like mad, with only black slacks and a white cardigan on.

A beep made Katherine's head turn. There, in a minivan, was Nick. He was waving for her to get in the car.

Without a second thought, she jogged to the minivan and got in.

"I figured you'd need a place to stay. The cabin is big. It's about an hour and a half drive from here. There's a phone, but's only for emergencies," he prompted her. "You understand?"

She nodded and he took off. The weather looked horrible. In large town, the two couldn't even count how many cars they'd seen in the white ditches.

Katherine yawned. Though she had slept on the plane, she was drained. The events of the day were pretty intense.

"Go to sleep, Katherine," Nick whispered.

She wasn't sure if it was sleep or Nick's calm, confident voice that beckoned her to her dreams. Perhaps it was a combination. All she remembered was closing her eyes and falling asleep.
