"So was it good for you?" Brian asked the next morning. A large grin was pasted on his face.Hailey almost choked on her coffee. "Excuse me?"
"You moaned, 'Oh Brian,' in your sleep. Was it good for you?"
She rolled her eyes. "Pervert. I wasn't dreaming about that. And even if I did, I'd bet you it was better than in real life."
"Ooh, feisty little girl."
"It's morning...too early...no sleep."
"You slept for hours, Hailey," he said.
"I hate morning people."
Brian nodded. "Me too," he replied thoughtfully. "Anyway, I have to go catch that case. Thanks so much," he said, kissing her politely on her cheek. Brian grabbed his suitcase and left in a cab he'd called earlier that morning.
Not even five minutes after he'd left, his phone rang. "Hello?"
"You miss me too much, don't you?" she asked, leaning on the counter, sipping her coffee.
"Extremely," he replied, "Lemme guess...Bently gave you this number?"
"Everything. Home, cell, office, e-mail and personal address," she listed.
Brian smiled. "How's Tom?"
"He's on tour. Hasn't called for weeks. Oh well."
"And Courtney?"
"Just invited her before I called you."
"That quickly?" he asked.
"Yes. When's the case over?"
"About 4:50."
"Want to go to dinner with Courtney and me?"
"I guess."
"Where can we pick you up?"
"631 Newport. You know where that is?"
"Sure do." Hailey spotted Courtney walking up the driveway. "Gotta go. Have fun." She hung up the phone and opened the door for Courtney.
"Hi, Kid!" Courtney greeted, walking in.
"Hey."
"So tell me details about this Brian babe," Courtney told her. She sat down on the couch.
"There's nothing to say. Blue eyes, blondish hair, cheekbones...Nice, funny, reasonable dresser."
"Is he a good kisser?"
"Courtney!" Hailey exclaimed.
"Fine, I'll find out myself," she told her best friend with a devilish grin.
"You will not sleep with him."
"Why not? I've boinked two - no, three - of your ex-'s. One wasn't your ex- at the time...Hell, I've had Tom once or twice. Why not Brian?"
"He doesn't need a chick like you."
"What's wrong with me? Goddamn, why is he any different?"
"Brian is different from my old boyfriends."
"You're jealous!" Courtney said in total shock.
"What?"
"You're just jealous that I'm going to get him first."
"God, you honestly think he'll sleep with you the first time you meet?"
"I guarantee it."
