chapter twenty - make me feel better: present

About ten minutes after Juliette had gotten off the phone with her mother, Nick called. She had still been crying, and he insisted on going to her house to comfort her.

"Juliette, don't worry." He gave her a warm, tight hug.

"But it's so wrongmy parents get divorced and they don't even call me to tell me? I'm their only child and I'm the one that's supposed to call them to find out what's going on. Yeah, it's their private life but this is a family thing. You're supposed to tell the kids, they cry about it, then they spend one weekend with the father and one weekend with the mother. It's as simple as that," she cried. Nick sighed, trying to figure out something to say.

"You're twenty-two years old, though. They probably want you to live your life without worrying about what they do and what problems they have."

"You're not making me feel better, Nick, you really aren't. You sound like you're just sticking up for them when they're the ones that did the wrong thing."

"No, I'm not. Just don't worry about it, babe. If they don't want you in their lives, then don't bother. You still have me." He smiled his famous sideways smile and kissed her on the cheek.

"I have something to tell you, Nicky," she said when she stopped crying.

"You know, you're the only one I let call me Nicky. Anyway, what?"

"I have been thinking a lot about you over the past four months, and," she paused for a moment, thinking of what to say. She looked up into his eyes. "I'm falling in love with you."

"I love you, Juliette." Nick leaned over and kissed her. And with that, the words were said. They both loved each other.

"Thanks for making me feel better," she smiled.

"Anytime," he replied, kissing her again.
