chapter fourteen - the talk: present

After Nick and Juliette had gotten ready for bed, Nick was sitting on the couch on Juliette on the bed. He was nervous of telling her, he wasn't sure if he should do it or not. But he finally sucked it up and began to speak.

"I was hoping that one day I'd get to tell you this," he began slowly. "I was just always afraid to. You were with Brandon, and then after him was Dustan. I never wanted you to feel uncomfortable if I told you when you had a serious relationship with someone. I waited for when the time was right, but it never came. My heart just felt so empty most of the time, I found myself kind of using other girls to make that feeling go away. It was wrong, I know, but I stopped. It all stopped when Mandah came. I thought she was beautiful, never thought she would play any games on me. But, I guess I was wrong" Nick was playing with his hands, never looking up at her. His voice cracked a few times, an effect of the nervousness.

"Nick, go on," Juliette said, encouraging him.

"Not even the deepest pain of being deceived could hide the love that I had for you. I would think about you whenever I felt sad. I kept a picture of you in a frame right next to my bed so I could just look over at it, and I would always smile back at you. It was like you were there, and everything in the world disappeared except you and me. The dreams every single nightevery time I was near you I could always smell the sweet scent of your perfume. White Diamonds by Elizabeth Taylor. I looked forward to seeing you every time we had rehearsal with Fatima. You would always sit on the bench, watching us and clapping at the end of all of the dances," Nick recalled. Juliette smiled, never taking her eyes off his.

"I did that to motivate you guys. Kevin looked dead, Howie looked extremely tired, AJ looked like he could go on all day, Brian looked confused, and you looked upset. Always upset with those four hour rehearsals."

"It was too much for me. You should've tried doing all those dances!" For the first time in the past ten minutes, Nick looked up at her and actually smiled. He didn't look upset before, he just looked serious and so under control.

"Yeah right! Watching was enough for me. But do go on. I want to hear the rest of yourstory."

"Well, anyway, I just never got enough of you. I didn't see you as much as the other guys since I got sick a lot during tours. You would always hang around with AJ in his bunk or in his hotel room. I never really got a chance to talk to you. But during the Millennium tour, everything was different. We really talked and had full length conversations. I put my all into all of the shows to make fans happy, of course, but also to impress you. You were always my motivation. Either on the side of the stage or right in front row, I still saw your bright smile. Always cheering us on. I love you, Juliette. I really do."

What can I say to that? Juliette thought. She froze at that moment, not knowing what to say, what to think, or what to do. I don't love him just yetwhat should I say? Okay, Jules, just start a new conversation. OKAY.

"You inspired me to start drawing, you know," she started. Nick looked up in surprise, his hair in his face. He shook his head a little, shaking the thin strands of hair away.

"Really?" He asked.

"Yeah. We were on the tour bus near Finland, and you were sitting down, playing Nintendo with Brian, and I just picked up a piece of paper and a pencil and started drawing you. You stayed in the same position, were so into the game. I still have that sketch. My first everI never told anyone but AJ about this. In my attic, there's a special hidden place where I go to paint. I have a lot of blank canvases, paints, a lot of pictures to draw, and AJ as my own special model," she smiled. Nick smiled shyly and looked down.

"So I inspired you, huh? That's an honor."

"Oh my god, I am so tired. It's four thirty in the morning! Nick, we spent two hours talking. I'm about to jet off to sleep right now," she said, yawning.

"Go right ahead. I'm not tired anymore. Is it okay if I turn on some music?"

"Have a ball." Juliette went under the covers and closed her eyes. She immediately fell asleep.
