Hi Y'all:
I know, I know, it's been such a long time since the last
"news." But am on track now!
For those of you who are not aware, Jimmy Cochrane is
"the" caterer to use in Tuscaloosa. He was featured in the
new and wonderful "Tuscaloosa Magazine" that came out around
Christmas. He uses some of his mother's recipes and they are
wonderful.
Sandra Henry Baker was named Public Citizen of the
Year back in March at the National Social Work Day workshop.
Sandra was also one of three nominees for 2005 Citizen of
the Year sponsored by the Tuscaloosa Civitan Club. She has
served as administrative assistant and client support
services coordinator in the Public Defender's office for 33
years. She is always giving of her time to wonder
organizations that involve helping people. You may also
encounter her if you are fined and given service work to do
as she is the whip that guides roadside cleanup early on
Saturday mornings! Even tho she did not win the Citizen of
the Year award, she is truly our Citizen of the Year.
Harry Hammonds had another surgery back in the middle
of March. I believe this involved some bone graft for
support for his foot. He called me back then prior to the
surgery and wanted me to thank al of you for your support
with calls & mail.
Barbara Robertson House shares the news that her
granddaughter, Senna Kathryn, age 5 models for an agency in
Birmingham and was chosen in March for a great modeling job.
The movie star, Jane Seymour, had a new children's clothing
line and was to be in Birmingham the first of April and she
had chosen Senna to model her line on live TV! They had a
scare just prior to the modeling date when Senna fell on her
elbow and broke her left arm, resulting in a cast. Her
modeling agent said she could not do the show with the cast
on, but after a call to her doctor, they removed the cast
just for the show and had it put back on right afterwards.
Ms. Seymour was so impressed that Senna would model with a
broken arm. Barbara has joined the ranks of The Retired as
of the last of June.
Lester & Joyce Gaddis Falls are grandparents again.
Their newest is a girl weighing in at 4 lbs. 15.9 oz. at
birth. This makes 7 grands for them!!! How wonderful.
One of Charles & Patti Renfroe's homes at
Watercolor/Seaside decorated by Toby West made the July
issue of "Veranda Magazine”. He wants me to remind you all
that they rent this one out. Those of us who participated in
the Orange Beach class reunion had a wonderful time. Those
present were:
Skipper & Mary Lou Falls, Otice & Demetra Bailey
Vail, Raymond & Kathryn Epperson Dockery, Roy
& Charlotte Cayley Lee, Bill & Suzie Boles Thetford,
Raymond & Mary Jo Russell Guy, Ron & Dee Donaldson,
Ronnie & Betty Meaney Rawlins, George & Anna Kate
Davis Taylor, Sandra Henry Baker, Ward
McFarland & me. Skipper's music was great. He did a
fabulous job of selecting the right songs. The weather was
fantastic and did not begin to rain until Sunday afternoon
when some of us were leaving for home. I really was
disappointed that we did not have any of the beach area
classmates join us. We thought this would bring you all
over. Just remember, that countdown is beginning for next
year's 45th Reunion. We will begin planning this month. If
you are ever in town over this next year, please call me and
see if we just might be getting together.
I had an unplanned thing happen to me in June. Gulf States
sold most of their profit-making businesses to Rock-Tenn
Company. As a result, I was laid off after 40 1/2 years with
them! This was my first week as a "retiree." I guess it will
sink in after a couple of weeks. I've never been off from
work longer than 2 weeks at a time. Just to let you know, I
applied over the internet for my Social Security and within
2 weeks' time, I had received notice of the amount of my
check and when it would begin. This is one area that is
working great. I was pleasantly surprised. I think I'm going
to "play" during July & August and look for work in
September.
Some interesting news - "Is it a Stroke?"
1. Ask the individual to smile.
2. Ask them to raise both arms.
3. Ask the person to speak a simple sentence.
If they have any trouble with any of these tasks, call 911
immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
This has recently been in the newspaper as well as on the
internet.
Some of our classmates have suffered losses:
Onita Flannigan Cooper's husband, Billy Joe
Cooper, died on 2/5/05.
Linda Broughton Woodall's mother, Georgia
Broughton, died on 4/14/05.
Mary Oliver White's mother, Cora Oliver
Henderson, died on 4/23/05.
We have had classmates to die since the first of the
year:
Pat Miller Harvel died on 1/3/05. Her husband,
Charles Harvell, resides in Guntersville, AL.
Lecil Gray III died on 1/28/05. He was buried in
Jasper, AL.
Millard Stone died on 3/3/05. His son, Jeff Stone,
lives in Overland Park, KS.
Carol Parham Davis died 6/27/05 unexpectedly. Her
husband, fellow classmate Billy Ray Davis, still lives in
Tuscaloosa.
Carol, Barbara Banks Knight & Doug Banks were first cousins.
Please keep these families in your prayers.
With the mail-out for the beach reunion, I had the following
classmates' mail returned. I'd really appreciate your help
if you can update.
* Paul Veihman,
* Shirley Swindle
Morris,
* Martha Marcum
Sherrill,
* Ross Phillips,
* Rebecca Woodward
Somers,
* Dr. David Smith,
* Beth Posey Lewis,

Clements Farris,
* James Andress.
Remember to hug someone everyday. It will do wonders for
your health!
Love,
Susan
