Legacy Project

squaring picnic table

For my legacy project, I decided to build a couple of wooden picnic tables for the Ag. department at Bellville.  These two picnic tables were built as auction items for various events within the community.  When deciding on which avenue to take for a legacy project, my cooperating teacher and I discussed several different possibilities before concluding on these tables.  We decided that since many of our judging teams qualified for state contests, I needed to do something that will help to recoup some of the money lost due to meals, hotels, and entry fees.  Each picnic cost $75 to build, and the first was sold for more than $400.  The second will be sold at the FFA banquet.

Throughout the construction process, we had hands-on training in different aspects of wood-working and carpentry.  This was a great learning experience, because the students that helped me had little experience in these areas.  Some of the skills that they mastered included: use of circular saw, router, drill, builder’s square, belt sanders, application of finishes and basic design process and following a set of plans.
