Brief History
"Bangkok Remand Prison" had been establised in 1890 at Trokkam District,Mahachai Road,during the perod of King Rama V. Its first name was "Prison for Serious Crime". Later,the prison's name was changed into "Klong Prem Central Prison (Petty Offense)" |

In 1970, a section for convicted inmates was separated to a new site on Ngam-wong-wan Road and was named as "Klong Prem Central Prison". The original prison on Mahachai Road was renamed as |

When Thonburi Province was united in Bangkok Metropolitan, the prison on Mahachai Road has been, once again, renamed as "Bangkok Remand Prison". In 1991 , the Ministry of Interior has issued an order to move the Bangkok Remand Prison to the other site, so as to form a public on the prison site to commemorate Her Majesty the Queen's 60th Birthday Anniversary. |

At present, Bangkok Remand Prison is located on Ngam-vong-wan Road where the Bang Khen Correctional for young Offenders used to be located. The prison's territory has been expanded so as to serve the increasing number of prisoners. |

Bangkok Remand Prison is responsible for taking in custody of offenders in Bangkok Metropolitan area. Prison Population includes inmates awaiting investigation, inmates awaiting trial, and convicted prisoners whose sentence term not exceeding 7 years. |

Treatment Programs for Inmates
Education
Bangkok Remand Prison has its intention to rehabilitate the inmates; so that they can reintegrate to their society as good citizen after release. Adult Education Programs are provided to inmates in the "Bangkok Adult School" established within the prison. Educational programs consist of:

Health Services
Within Bangkok Remand prison, there is a nursing home with its capacity of 50 in - patient beds. One full-time medical doctor and 12 medical staff are responsible for inmate' health service. In case of serious sickness of emergency, sick prisoners shall be referred to the Central Correctional Hospital located within the adjacent prison.
Prison Operations
Practically, there are 2 types of release operated by Bangkok Remand Prison:
1. Release while the charge is un-complete, and
2. Release while the charge is complete.
Release while the charge is un-complete
Inmates that can be released while the charge is un-complete are inmates whose charges are under investigation, awaiting trial, or pending appeal. These inmates might be released under criminal justice procedure conditions e.g. release or temporary release, case being dismissed, release upon the request of the investigators or public prosecutors. The prison has to release the inmates according to a release warrant issued by the court.
Release while the charge is complete
Release while the charge is complete means the release of convicted prisoners, which can be done in these following cases:
- Release on the termination of sentence term (un-conditioned),
- Release on good-conduct allowance system (conditioned),
- Release on parole (conditioned), and
- Release on royal pardon (un-conditioned).
Release on Good-Conduct Allowance System
Convicted prisoners, being incarcerated more than 6 months (at least 10 years for lifers), being a good-class, best-class, and excellent-class prisoner, are eligible to receive good-conduct accumulation days according to their classes:
- Excellent-class prisoner shall receive 5 days per month,
- Best-class prisoner shall receive 4 days per month, and
- Good-class prisoner shall receive 3 days per month.
These good conduct allowance days are accumulated. When the accumulated allowance is equal to the remaining of the sentence term, it will be submitted to the Good Conduct Allowance Committee consisting of representatives from Corrections Department, Royal Police Department, Office of Public Prosecution, Public Welfare Department, and Medical Department. The Committee holds a meeting every month to consider qualified inmates who shall receive conditional release of being approved by the Committee.
Release on Parole
Convicted prisoners of these following qualifications are eligible for parole:
- Being good-class, best-class, and excellent class prisoner,
- Excellent-class prisoner is required to serve at least 2/3 of the sentence term,
- Best-class prisoner is required to serve at least 3/4 of the sentence term, and
- Good-class prisoner is required to serve at least 4/5 of the full sentence.
Visit to Inmates in Bangkok Remand Prison
1. Inmates get access to visit on weekdays and public holidays, (not on Saturday and Sunday),
2. Inmates are allowed to receive one daily visit of 15 minutes time, and
3. Visiting Schedule:
- Morning Period 08.30 - 12.00
AM.
- Afternoon Period 13.00 - 14.30
PM.
How to Deposit Things for Inmates
Bangkok Remand Prison has provided a welfare shop in front of the prison (in front of the visiting room). Visitors are invited to purchase commodities in the welfare shop and deposit for the inmates. Deposited items shall be sealed and then be given to the inmates without delay. The relatives may bring some commodities to the inmates, but the commodities are subject to a through search by prison staff before giving to the inmates.
Appropriate Way to Contact with the Prison
1. Dress politely,
2. Do not make loud noise while being in the prison,
3. Contact directly with prison when having questions or problems, and
4. Be careful! Never trust a person claiming to be correctional officer and trying to convince of helping the inmate in exchanging with money.
