Hotels near the Don Muang Airport

The Don Muang Airport is a gold mine both for the Thai Government and private entrepreneurs. That is, they're eager to squeeze profit out of arriving foreigners on every possible occasion. The Amari Airport Hotel is something of an epitome. While its location is very convenient for an odd-time arrival/departure at the Airport, its room rates are prohibitive.

Most people stay in central Bangkok immediately after arrival or before departure. Some people prefer to stay in one of those hotels within a few kilometers' distance from the Airport (typically 1,000B - 2,000B, need to take a taxi).

The WE-TRAIN International House is a rather unique existence. Basically, this is a fund-raising project for a non-profit, charitable organization called "Association for the Promotion of the Status of Women" and the hotel is surrounded by several such buildings. It's located in a suburban residential area, away from any shopping/tourist areas. They have rather idiosyncratic room rates:
1 person ... 400B for a standard twin room
2 persons ... 500B for a standard twin room
3 persons ... 650B for a standard twin room + extra bed
These rates do NOT include breakfast. Even a small child not requiring a bed is counted as "one person" and charged as such. They serve only basic meals, and you need to purchase food coupons at the reception in advance, where the receptionists' attitude is often bureaucratic.

They have a dormitory for 80B/bed, but this is at minimum 10 beds (800B), and you need to make a reservation in advance.

You may experience difficulty giving the taxi driver the directions. (Want to walk? It's about 4km.)

Following is a list of alternative accommodations within a walking distance from the Airport.

Don Muang Mansion
Walking distance: 1,200m
Phone: 02-566-3023 ( ... -3030)
Rate: 600B for an air-conditioned room.
Description: Solid 7-story building with a spacious parking lot. Edible restaurant open until 2:30am.

Noi Guesthouse
Walking distance: 400m
Phone: 02-928-0976
Rate: 200B for a small fan room, 300B for a slightly larger fan room, 400B for an air-conditioned room, 100B for a tent (in case other rooms are full, tent and blanket provided)
Description: Kind of like a cultural experience (or challenge) in a "congested area" along a canal. Ramshackle 2-story wooden house. They have a narrow space where you can try to squeeze in a motorcycle. They have only a few rooms, so better call them to inquire vacancy in advance. The proprietor (Grandma Noi's daughter) is a friendly woman. You can call or arrive at the place at any late hour, if you don't mind waking them up. One thing is, they seem to have flexible room rates. There have been reports that one was charged 600B for a fan room and 1000B for an air-conditioned room. So better make sure on the phone before arriving there.
