Garmin International Inc.

The Garmin International Inc. provides several maps for Garmin GPS models. At the moment, the MapSource WorldMap is the only product which covers Thailand.

The Asia-Pacific Model of the Garmin GPS has, in its ROM, the equivalence of the MapSource WorldMap for the Asia-pacific region, including Thailand.

Thus, as far as Thailand is concerned, following equation holds:
 Garmin Asia-Pacific Model = Garmin non-Asia-Pacific Model + MapSource WorldMap

The MapSource CD contains map data and a useful GPS software. The CD costs around $80 (3,200 B) in the international market (link), but around 7,000B in Thailand.

Its Thailand data is based on an open GIS data, and outdated by about 30 years. Still, it roughly covers major roads in Thailand. You can check the details of the MapSource/World Map here.

Incidentally, other maps like MultiMap or Microsoft MapPoint use the same GIS data for Thailand.

ESRI (Thailand) Co., Ltd.

The ESRI Thailand has an extensive geospatial database of Thailand, primarily for their professional GIS datasets called ArcData (50,000B - 7,000,000B). The company could easily provide a very detailed GPS map of Thailand without further operating costs but, apparently, the limited number of GPS users in Thailand doesn't attract the company's attention.

* Thailand Free Data
Currently, the ESRI has a mediocre GPS map of Thailand. It's given out for free for those who buy a Garmin GPS from the ESRI. In Bangkok, the ESRI map is more detailed than the MapSource but, in the countryside, it is even less detailed. However, where the ESRI map shows a road or a river, it is very accurate. Reportedly, its scale (detail) is 1:50,000, whereas that of the MapSource WorldMap is 1:1,000,000.

* Thailand City Select
The ESRI Thailand now provides this more practical map. In major cities like Bangkok or Chiangmai, this map is pretty detailed with minor roads and sois. Priced at ?,???B.

* Mapsource Thailand

Soon to be available??

Maps of Thailand Free!

These maps are still in a developmental stage, thus missing many major roads, but they may provide good guidance when used in conjunction with the MapSource/WorldMap, switching alternatively depending on the circumstances.

Pocket PC (OS: Windows CE)

* SmartMap by MapPointAsia

The MapPointAsia is a major competitor for the ESRI in digital mapping of Thailand. Previously, the company provided SmartMap Viewer CE 3.0 / Thailand, but this product is difficult to find in shops these days.

As its successor, in conjunction with the C & N Solution Co., Ltd., the company now provides SmartMap RoadGuide. Its details are unknown to the author, but presumably fairly good. Priced at 1,500B, but discounted at around 900B.

A similar product is SmartNav for Samart which is a bundle software for the O2 Xda II, available at the "Samart i-mobile." Here's a detailed review.

* BKK Map Adventure by (company name?)

This venture company has been successful in promoting its BKK Map Adventure for the Pocket PC, partly because of lack of serious competitors. Now that the ESRI and MapPointAsia have entered the market with their vast road data, they may well need re-conceptualization to survive in the expanding market. Priced at 990B. link

* Thailand City Select by ESRI (Thailand)
This ESRI GPS map is designed for Garmin GPS but, as an exception, by purchasing the Garmin cf QUE (GPS module for the Pocket PC), you can use this map on a Pocket PC.

* Able ITS Company
This is a new face in the GPS market in Thailand, but its vision and target seem to be promising if accompanied with a detailed map. link

PC (OS: Windows XP, NT, etc)

If you have a portable notebook, or don't mind carrying a not-so-portable notebook, you have a variety of choice, among which the most convenient one is to use the standard SmarMap Viewer.
