Chuck Burgi
As totally diverse a drummer as they come, there is literally nothing that Chuck Burgi hasn't done in his musical career. His list of credits are endless, including stints with Brand X, Jon Bon Jovi, Rainbow, Blue Oyster Cult, Meatloaf, Aldo Nova, Diana Ross, Michael Bolton, and most recently, Enrique and Julio Iglesias. However, it was his stint with Brand X that caught my attention. Chuck's only official studio album with the band was on the 1978 release, Masques, during a period of time in which original Brand X drummer Phil Collins was touring with Genesis. He more than picked up where Phil left off, supplying a dizzying array of drumwork to drive along the frantic fusion/jazz stylings of the eclectic British band. I was really impressed at some of the unusual but very funky fills that Chuck used on the album and even more impressed at his playing and soloing on the Brand X bootleg "Masques Off". Being that I am not very familiar with his varied work outside of Brand X, it is hard to imagine Chuck drumming in any other setting but that is part of what being a great drummer is all about. Being able to adapt to any enviroment musically. Here's an interesting tidbit about Chuck as well: he was the drummer for the first WWF Wrestling album back in 1985. For any of you wrestling fans in the mid 80's, that means, whenever you saw Hulk hogan coming out to the ring with his theme music, it was Chuck drumming on it. Crazy, yes I know, but interesting nonetheless. Regardless of whom he has played for or what genre he plays in, Chuck is one of the greatest drummers I have ever heard.
