Is Paris Burning

Is Paris Burning, by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre, 1965, Simon and Schuster, New York

Adolf Hitler really hated the French. He decided that his retreating armies should leave a pile of rubble where Paris used to be. To defend Paris to the end and in the process destroy the city he appointed General Dietrich von Choltitz as commander of Paris. But Choltitz didn't want to go down in history as the man who destroyed Paris. This is the story of how Paris came to be saved from Hitler's fury.

This is a very good book with lots of personal stories from the participants in the battle for Paris.
