Winston Churchill was not only the leader of Great Britain through WWII, he was also a great author. During the years between WWI and WWII, he earned most of his living as an author writing many books. He wrote a number of them after WWII as well.
The Gathering Storm tells about the period from 1919 at the end of the "war to end all wars" through the start of WWII until the time when churchill was asked to be Prime Minister. In his preface, Churchill calls WWII, "The Unnecessary War". In the book he describes the many chances the western allies, Britain and France, had to prevent Hitler from starting the war. He also describes the unreadyness of the British and the French, how they ignored the signs of war ahead until it was too late.
This is an excellent book but not light reading. It is interesting for the amateur historian to note the things not mentioned in the book, such as "Ultra". Of course, Churchill couldn't tell about these things, they were top secret until the 70's.
