"For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt;
I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me.
Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there?
why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?
Oh, that my head were waters,
and mine eyes a fountain of tears,
that I might weep day and night
for the slain of the daughter of my people!"
(Jer. 8.21,22 and 9.1)

David Wiggins Sandell was still living at home with his parents on 1860
census. It was the same for Mary Brent. Both families were living in
Walker Co., Texas near Huntsville. David died in 1862, possibly before
his wife knew she was pregnant. The Bible given to Mary reads,
'Mary E. Sandel's book presented to her by her affectionate
husband D.W. Sandel.'
Her daughter Mollie (Mary Wiggins) passed it on to her daughter May Brent
Putman and May Brent Putman passed it on to her daughter Ester May
Harrison.
There was another inscription that was partially illegible at the
time I read it (at one time the Bible seemed to have been water stained)
which read "Dear Mary seek ye first the kingdom of God and his
righteousness and all things shall be added unto you. Blessed are the
pure in heart for they shall see God. ------- ------- ------- rational
person. To ------- the sacred truths that are enclosed in the Holy
Volume." In the front of the Bible the notation is made "D. W. Sandel
bought of Dr ------Ran---, Sept. 19, 1859. " The frontpiece of the Bible
reads "The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments, Translated
out of the Original Tongues: and with the former translations diligently
compared and revised. New York : American Bible Society, instituted in
the Year 1816. 1858. (Pearl Ref., 18."

The marriage record for David W. Sandel and Mary E Brent has not been
found. However when I corresponded with Iantha Smith, she stated in her
correspondence that she had information in her research of David's and
Mary's only daughter but did not remember her source.
Update to the above mentioned source. The last will and testament of Peter W. Sandel mentions Mollie Sandel by name as his granddaughter.
