JOHNSON, LAUGHRIDGE, ECHOLS, LATIMER, and DEAL FAMILIES

COLONEL JOHN JOHNSON BORN ? DIED ABOUT 1830 Pioneer of Phillips and St Francis County, Arkansas. He was mentioned in Goodspeeds "Eastern Arkansas" page 333 in his biography of Dr William D. Allen. "In 1852,, Dr Allen was united in marriage to Miss Eliza Oliver, a granddaughter of John Johnson, who came to Arkansas in 1812, settling in Phillips, now St. Francis County, where he cleared a large tract of land, and there died about 1830. Many of his descendants are still living in this section, prosperous and well-to-do. In the Arkansas Gazette, the marriage of his daughter was announced November 23, 1841: "John Laughridge of Mississippi. Married in St. Francis County 11/10/1831 by Spencer Crouch to Miss Nancy C. Johnson youngest daughter of Col. John Johnson." Thus he had the title of Colonel. In 1827 he represented Crittenden Coounty in the Territorial legislature and he was a judge in St. Francis County. Besides his youngest daughter Nancy C. I know of at least one other daughter by name, Eliza E. Johnson who was born 1810 or 1811 in Georgia and who is linked with the Latimer family in St Francis County through deed records. However, she was married in Monroe County, Mississippi and lived there. The last census record I have of her is in 1880.
