First off, a little about us; Sian & Arno, current home Munich, Germany. We have been here for the last 4 years, working to replenish the coffers after the last trip. Arno spent almost 2 years on the road, riding from Munich to Sydney I had abandoned the UK and was on the backpacking trail for a year, taking in Africa, Australia (where we met) and Asia.
I have spent the last couple of years working in a store selling travel equipment, very useful in keeping up-to-date with all the latest gadgets!! We actually intended to be back in Australia by now, but our migration application is gathering dust in an in-tray somewhere, so, rather than face another chilly winter here in Central Europe, we have decided to fill the time with a year or so in the Americas. Our departure date is set for the beginning of September 2002, and now the race is on to get ourselves and our bikes ready in time.
Ah yes the bikes…………… Arno, inseparable from his BMW GS 100 PD Classic, has spent the last few months giving her a total overhaul. It took a lot of weekend work plus numerous visits to BMW München before BB was pronounced fit to travel again. Now even with 120,000 km’s on the clock she runs like a dream and the bonus of course, is that Arno now knows virtually every nut, bolt and washer intimately!! A few more things to be done and his bike will be raring to go. I ride an XT 600 E, that has done only 20,000 odd km’s, so not much to do engine wise, however it needs lots of extras to make it fit for travelling.
Arno, a master pastry chef, has spent the last 4 years making delicious cakes, chocolates and lots of German specialites. In his spare time he has been busy restoring 2 classic motorbikes and filling out forms for the Dept of Immigration – Australia!
