Big Fresh is going in a different direction, I believe. There is no wishy-washy "I'm Happy, I'm Sad" garbage on this album. When an emotion comes through, and there is not a song on this album that is not full of emotion, it is taken to the full extent that musical creativity will allow. This is not to say that BF is the greatest band alive today, or that they have reached the highest level of technical proficiency and emotional wisdom, but they are definitely on an enlightening tip. And they are very smart musicians. They are a pop band in the way that Andy Warhol envisioned pop. While the surface seems to be bright and polished, there is always a sadness or darkness that makes us cling to the nice surface. But the smart ones, like Big Fresh, know that pop music alone cannot save our souls. We must know the dark to really appreciate the light.

Listen to the song "Hip Hop and Pop". The words are comical, but they express a longing for a better time and place. By the chorus the airy, dreamy verse is replaced by aggressive demands, "...and if you don't understand / we will show you the way." I would say that for all their flights of fancy, Big Fresh is deadly serious about pop music. And while you laugh, you too should listen to what they are saying. They are really not sparing us anything. They are not trying to cram their intellectual and emotional ideas into a word as easy as bittersweet. But the genius is that they can fit their honest emotions into catchy, tight, four minute pop songs.

Big Fresh are still young and are nowhere near content. They still worry about how to pay rent, how to get money for food, where they are going and how they will get there. They worry whether you will buy this cd and if they are going to make back the money they paid for it. If you are reading these notes while listening to your brand new big fresh cd, you must know that it is not what many would say is modern pop music. But it is the most modern pop music...because as it reaches back to a purer and more honest time in popular music, it still retains a world weariness, a cynicism that is truly 1999. All I can tell you is that it is honest and is damn good. See for yourself. db coy, july 99

BIG FRESH
Who Are the Believers
local release
----------------------------------------------
It a time when pop music has been handed off to cardboard cut-out boy bands and copycat teenage divas-in-waiting, Big Fresh more than lives up to its name, reclaiming a piece of the pop music pie. Exhibiting genetic links to the '60s, they offer soothing lullabies as well as the hypnotic ambiance of subterranean night dreams in their own brand of breezy pop. Their sparkling songs are the perfect soundtrack for a variety of moods, from days of languor to moments of bliss.

With pseudo-filmic atmospherics, Who Are the Believers is full of sweet and dreamy dynamics. "Smile" is a gentle track with brave vocals and a pleasant minimalist approach that lets all the musical subtleties rise to the surface. Soulful singing and doleful keyboards make "Daydream" a gem while the sweeping melody and Velveteen chorus of "Leap Into The Sky" are marvelous. Not to mention the instrumental "Ein Heisser Tip Fur Boys Und Girls" which sounds like it could have been used in a bad Elvis movie.

John Ferguson's voice has a ripeness of tone and a joyful range. The songs have a spaciousness and a genuine gloss. There are definite musical allusions to the Beach Boys throughout. But the album itself is throttled by its own cleverness and a quirky strand of songs. It's an album that blooms on repeated listenings and invites you to drift away with the band. You may not always be sure where they're going, but that's part of the fun.
