A LIST OF NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNERS

The National Book Awards were established in 1950 by a consortium of publishing groups who wanted to bring to the public's attention exceptional books written by Americans, as well as encourage reading in general. Today, the awards are given to recognize achievements in four genres: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young people's literature. The winners, chosen by five-member, independent judging panels for each genre, receive a $10,000 cash award and a crystal sculpture.
