I am a deaf by birth, with profound bilateral hearing loss more than 100 dB in both ears.

Here my gratitude goes to My parents Mrs.Ratna B Shetty, Mr. T.Bhaskar Shetty who nurtured me with care, dedication.

My Journey to the "External World".

The world around us is so fascinating, complete with plethora of things, creatures and structures. We have hands to eat, work, lift, legs to walk, run, eyes to see and ears to hear what others say. Any irreparable damage to any of our organ means inability to perform any routine task. Of these "deafness" can be most frightening 'coz it separates you from other human beings as quoted by legendary Helen Keller.

This can be overcome in most cases, and luckily happened in my case thanks to My Parents whose grit, determination, perseverance prevented me from losing contact with outside world. This short bio shall focus on that aspect.

When I was born as a profound deaf, my parents were aghast. Visits to many hospitals, clinics, centres proved futile. It was here in AIISH, Mysore that someone told my parents about the pre-school for deafs run by Wing.Commdr.K.K.Srinivasan.
My parents learnt from him that he too had a deaf son named Raja S Kushalnagar, whom he had got trained in Bala Vidyalaya, Chennai. During the process of training his son he and his wife,Mrs.Ratna Srinivasan came up with the idea of setting up the school in Mysore. Today this school has undergone name change from "Helen Keller Pre-School for the deafs" to "Rotary West Institute for the mother and the deaf child". Location has also been shifted. Read an article about deaf upbringing prepared by my mother for presentation on behalf of the school at AIR, Mysore .

I was trained in Wood ford Aural method. Support and training by my dear mom and Srinivasan couple helped me develop speaking abilities. Sign-language was strictly prohibited. I initially wrote and spoke in my native language, Kannada. Later I caught up with English. I was enrolled at tender age of 2 years and that made the difference to my training. Read my mother's article on bringing up deafs. In short this school made me enter "the other world" (world where speech is important).
Later I attended many normal schools studying on par with normals. I was lot involved in drawing and host of other extracurriculars.. I passed out of flying colors in the 10th standard AISSE exam (CBSE) at 84%. This enabled me to complete PUC in Marimallappa's Mysore(84%- overall , PCM - 87%). I got admission to SJCE through CET, Karnataka. Currently I am doing 5th semester CS&E in SJCE.
