Uncle Walter's Ben Folds Five Page: Old News

8-20-00: Hey! Long time no update. I hope to keep the site fairly maintained from now on. Now for the news...

Ben Folds has reportedly recorded a song ("Wandering") and done some of the musical score for the upcoming film, "100 Girls."

There are four new songs floating around on Napster: "Emelia Bright", "Prince Charming", "Tell Me What I Did", and "The Secret Life of Morgan Davis". "Prince Charming" and "Tell Me What I Did." The latter two songs are both written and sung by Robert. "Emelia Bright" was written mostly by Darren but sung entirely by Ben. "The Secret Life of Morgan Davis" is about a guy who goes out one night for a box of Cream of Wheat, and comes home "with a little bit more..."

2-22-00: The band has announced a short "warm-up" tour of colleges on the east coast. Check the tourdates section to see if they're coming to your town.

"Songs For Summer", a charity compilation album, will be released on March 21. Ben Folds Five has contributed the track, "Where's Summer B.?" to the album. For more on this album, go to http://www.oglio.com/summer.

The band will do a cover of "Listen to What the Man Said" for a Paul McCartney tribute album. Other acts include Foo Fighters ("Jet") and Barenaked Ladies ("Junk"). Stay tuned for a release date.

1-29-00: Ben Folds will be doing a solo show in Australia. This show will be part of the sixth international Music Bridges around the World cultural exchange. Tickets now available via TicketMaster Australia.

1-2-00: I've recently gotten a tape of one of the Darren solo gigs at Brownies in NYC from this summer, and I've posted the lyrics

12-8-99: Hi. The lack of recent updates is due to the lack of recent news. After the band finishes their overseas tour, they will go home to the US/Australia: Ben will take a break and live life. Darren will possibly do a solo tour early this year with his own band, including himself on acoustic guitar. Expect an album from him sometime late next year. Robert will also work on solo music, and probably guest star on a few records.

Hopefully, Ben Folds Five will release their album in roughly December of next year. Songs may include "Carrying Cathy", "Make Me Mommy", "Breakup at Foodcourt", which were cut off of The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner.

And so the slow season begins...

11-15-99: The promotional single for "Magic" has been sent out to radio stations in the US. It should appear on your local alternitive station possibly as soon as in a week. See the cover of the single here.

11-11-99: Quit a bit of news today...In Magical Armchair Digest #1809, someone pretending to be Frank Maynard (the owner of the list) said that Ben Folds Five would release an album in May of 2000 with "guest musicians Yngwie Malmsteen and Ice T." This is not true. Due to this post (and several others including posts from people pretending to be Darren and Robert) , Frank has decided to shut down the list for about a week. When it returns, it will enforce it's rules about flaming and fraudulent posts more strictly. I, for one, am happy to see this change for the better. The list has been slowly deteriorating before all of our eyes, and something needed to be done.

A live performance of "Don't Change Your Plans" (In Windows Media Player only) is available at Launch.com.

The airdate of the World Cafe show taped in October is November 19. More information below.

The band is rumored to be planning to do a song for an upcoming Disney movie. They will reportedly do the "bad guy" theme.

The band has reportedly agreed to do a track for a film. The movie, "Me, Myself & Irene", starring Jim Carrey and Renee Zellweger, and directed by the Farrelly brothers (Something About Mary, Dumb and Dumber) will be released on May 4, 2000. The song is a cover of a Steely Dan song, "Barrytown". The soundtrack's release date is yet to be known. For more on the film, visit Bad Movie News.

10-29-99: Darren Jesse will be playing a solo acoustic gig on Friday November 5th at midnight. It will be at CB's Gallery in New York City.

Ben Folds Five will be a part live webcast-fest on October 31st, begining at 12pm EST, 9am PST. Other artists performing are Wyclef Jean & The Refuge AllStars, Moby, Third Eye Blind, Citizen King, and lots more. BFF will hit the stage around 4:30pm EST, 1:30pm PST. For more on the webcast, check out the official page for the event.

"The Best of the Rest" section has been added to the site. It contains links to a gigantic MP3 ftp, a guide to who's on the Magical Armchair, and more.

10-17-99: I started a new "Videos" section in shich you can see the videos for "Army", "Uncle Walter", "Don't Change Your Plans", and a few others.

10-14-99: The band has announced they will be taping a performance for the Public Radio International radio show, "World Cafe", on October 21 in Philidelphia. The air date of the performance is November 19. To find the PRI station nearest you, go to www.pri.com.

9-29-99: Spoken/sung words from Fear Of Pop have been posted in the lyrics section.

9-17-99: Check out the recently updated tour and picture sections. On Saturday, October 2, CBC Radio Two's RadioSonic program features a rerun of the Government Hall show in Toronto, Canada. You can listen to it on RealAudio at CBC Radio's site.

9-9-99: I changed the address of Uncle Walter's from come.to/benfolds5 to http://www.BenFoldsFive.Pyar.com. Make sure to update your bookmarks!

7-25-99: "Tell me all your secrets & I'll tell you most of mine..." You can now vent your loves, hates, fears, etc, about the band (of coarse) at my brand new BFF message board

7-23-99: Frally gave birth today!!!!!! (or possibly yesterday) Details are scetchy but here's what we know: 1. One is a girl, the other a boy. 2. They were born in or around Adelaide, Australia. 3. Both babies are supposedly healthy and happy.

I've been working alot on this Webring stuff. I submitted my site to Underground like five months ago, when I first started this site, and I just got accepted. I also just started my own webring. It's called The Webring From Dr.Pyser. Find out more about it by clicking on the link back there. Anyone with a page can join.

6-23-99: Added a bunch of chords, almost all of Reinhold, plus Missing the War & One Angry Dwarf And 200 Solemn Faces.

6-22-99: I'm moving alot of stuff around today, so if you click on a link and it comes up as "OOPS! Geocities couldn't find that page!", then try again 5-10 minutes later. I added the chords to Underground, Kate, Army, Plans, Jane, and Your Most Valuable Possesion. Check em' out here.

6-21-99: I added the chords to three songs: Leather Jacket, Mitchell Lane, and Air. And if you haven't already gotten the No Bounadaries CD, you should. Leather Jacket is short, but awesome

6-18-99: Take heed: today was the day that the Uncle Walter Mailing List was revived. Join at the bottom of this page or the index page. Anyone who wants to can join. Also added were some pictures of the boys at the 91X-Fest in San Diego a few weeks ago, and I got rid of a bunch of other stuff, like tourdates, etc. Let's face it: Uncle Walter is not the man to go to for tourdates. The second single for Reinhold is goung to be "Don't Change Your Plans". They just finishe the video for it.
*** 6-14-99: I'll have lot more time this summer to update, so keep checking daily for new stuff (which I'm sure you already do). I got around to posting the interview from the "Truth & Rumors with Ben Folds Five" that Muckley at 91X gave me. It took forever to do! See it here.

BFF is putting new song on an album that comes out tomarrow to benefiet the Kosovo Refugees called "No Boundaries". The song is called "Leather Jacket." It's a soft, dreamy, 50's-esque tune with bells lots of harmonies. Listen to a RealAudio or .wav clip of the song. The .wav clip is takes longer to load, but the RA keeps breaking up.

I added two new RealAudio files: a telephone with Ben interview from around the time NBP came out, and a really cool excerpt from the live webcast. Hear them both here.

The boys on LoveLine were awesome, except for the fact that Adam kept calling the new album "Reinhold Messner" instead of "The Unauthorized Biography of..." and for some reason Darren wasn't there. BFF on Leno was average. Of coarse, they played "Army" with Painter & the guys from SNZ on horns. The only new thing is that for the first time (on TV) Ben said "fucking high" instead of "must be high" or something to that effect. No new media events have been schedualed as of this date.

6-8-99: Tonight (or possibly tomarrow), Ben Folds Five (or possibly just Ben) will on Loveline w/ Adam Carolla & Dr. Drew. I'm not talking about the TV show on MTV, I mean the radio show. Check your local listings kids.

I saw Ben on Politically Incorrect last night. The other guests were Alan Thicke (that's right! The guy from growing pains!!!) and two feminests. It was horrible. The other three people were so pushy that Ben, and I'm dead serious, did not say a single word until they rolled the credits. And even then, it was only two or three sentences. It was a massacre. But anyways, the boys will be on Jay Leno tonight and hopefully that will be better. Although I am kinda getting sick of hear Army over and over and over.....

6-5-99: So....it's kind of been a slow couple of weeks for Ben Folds Five news....I did a major update of the site; I made a bass tab page. For the time being, it only has two tabs, "Army" & "Fair". I know a bunch more of their songs on bass, I'm just really really really busy with finals and a buch of other junk I won't bore you with. Anyways, if you can find the time to trascribe any BFF song on bass, please mail it to me at: [email protected]. It's very greatly appriciated.

I gave the chords for the new song, "Jane" to a site called The Page from Dr.Pyser. You can see it here. I updated the link section with a few more cool BFF sites, and threw out some old ones.

5-29-99: As luck would have it, I have my graduation on the 12th, that being the same day as the 91x-Fest, so I'm probably not going to get to see the boys live for a while.

You'd know this if you've gone to any other BFF site in the past three months, but on June 7, they (actually I think just Ben) will be on ABC's Polically Incorrect w/ Bill Maher. And on the 8th the boys will be playing Army on the Tonight Show w/ Jay Leno.

On the 20th, Ben married Frally at her home in Australia. I found some pictures of the two, but for some reason, I can't load them. But you can see them at this site called the In-Betweens. There are about a million thumnails on the picture pages, and on my other computer, the page won't even, so I took the liberty of giving you the link directly to the picture (NOT the whole page oif thumnails. To see the picture of the two in a local newspaper the day after they were in Frally's home town of Adelaide (AD-el-aid), click here. To see a pic of the two a few months ago in Adelaide, click here. To visit the main picture site which serously took me at least 5 minutes to load (and I have cable internet!), go here

The couple's twins are due in July. One is a girl, and the other's a boy. The Reinhold Tour is based around Ben being in Australia in July so he can be there to be with Frally.

5-3-99: I AM SOOOOOOO STOKED! I found out this morning that a certain local radio station is having a series of concerts this summer, and who is going first....none other than BEN FOLDS FIVE!!!! You have to understand excitement because I got in to the band right after the leg of the Whatever tour passed by here. If you want tickets to it and you live in southern California, you can contact the good people at 91X.

I'm Trusting that every here has already bought the album, thus, not needing another review. However, if you do want a review in the boys favor, check out this weeks Rolling Stone. (Kurt Cobain on the cover) They gave it three and a half stars out of a possible five.

And to correct a statement I made earlier, no, it is NOT a chat that the band is having tonight, but a live concert in NY.

4-2-99: Hey y'all. Thought it wuz time for an update.

As it turns out, Benny and Frally are going to have the twins in Austrailia and raise them in the US. At least that's what the Armchair said.

The lyrics for the new album are already on the net. They're at exit 13. There's everything from "Hospital Song" to "Army".

3-26-99: I'm still here, everyone. My computer keeps dying on me (MAC POWER!) and the only place I can get online is my friends house.

I just heard "(I thought about the) Army"!! It's really cool. It's like a rough mix of the Beatles "Got to get you into my life". It's got the traditional distorted bass and piano solos, too. If you haven't heard it, dont worry. It I'll be at most record stores with in the week.

Thanks to Ann (?) sent me a mail saying Benny is moving down to Australia with his new squeeze Frally. They'll probably get hitched soon.

The good ol' folks down at the Geocties H.Q. keep deleting my RealAudio pages for some odd reason. I'll try to fix that. The lyrics for "Army" have been posted at a few sites. Here's the gist of it: it's a minnie autobio of ben. The title came from how he thought of a way to pay for college (which i don't reccomend) There's a bit more vulgar language than in previous bff singles, so I don't recomend playing it to your parents. It should be out later this month.

BEN'S PREGANANT! Not BEN but FRALLY, his aussie girlfriend. She was the screaming woman on "Root to This" on Fear Of Pop. They're havimg twins. No due date has been announced.

2-28-99: I've gotten a few mails about where the band is going to be playing this Spring/Summer, and I've answered nearly every one of them. If you have a question, mail me. You should first check out the touring dates though.

Only about a month and a half 'till the new album comes out.

2-26-99: Sorry, I just haven't had the time to update in a while. Here's the scoop: the new album's release date has been announced. Get the whole story here.

Take a (not-so) virtual tour of Chapel Hill, NC without getting off your can!

2-22-99: I put up lots of b-sides & demos in the RealAudio archives

2-21-99: We're back up! (Server problems)

2-3-99: I finally finished the lyrics. Well, most of them. I'll totally finish them in a few days. But they're on theweb. That's an accomplishment in itself.

Some BF5 news:

A few days ago, the band released some info about their new album. Actually just some song names. They are: "Narcolepsy" and "Army". The albums name is still undecided.(Not any more. Click here to get the dilly)

A BF5 funfact:

Did you know that "Whatever and Ever, Amen" was almost called "Cigarette" or "The Little Girl With Teeth"? Well now you do.

1-31-99: Okay, toight I finished the Whatver and ever Amen lyrics and started the BF5 ones. Haven't gotten round to NBP yet. But I think that I'm doing quite well for two days, eh'?

1-30-99: I'm just starting this place up, but I'll put a little bit o' info for the fun of it.

On December 17th (U.S.) Ben Folds (w/o his Five) released a prodject entitled "Fear of Pop". The name of the album is called "Vol. 1". (Fear of Pop is the name of the...well, I guess you could call it a band.) He produced it himself along with Caleb Southern, who has produced BF5's first three albums. To those of you who are only into Benny's sticky sweet melodies, I'm almost positive that this album will turn you off from his music. It's a fairly short LP, only containing 11 songs.

Last Friday night, Ben Folds and William Shatner performed "In Love" on Late Night w/ Conan O'Brien. I didn't hear about it until the day after, so I couldn't tell you if it was as good as when they did "Song for the Dumped" or the Battle of Who Could Care Less" last summer.

The band is currently recording a new album in New York and L.A. that is due out in late March/early April. A tour will undoubtedly follow it's release.
