Picture taken by Neil, behind the Millinneum Hotel in 2002.  The dog is waiting to be picked up to go home or to be taken out to the prison to await a ride home
A similiar scene might be found at one of the check points, where a team might be resting..
A cozy bed in the snow.....
My Sled Dog & her sled
This is Vonnie.   For some time she would bring me this shoe, when I'd get my coat and purse.  I had to put a stop to it, for she might choose to chew it up, hide it in a safe place, or whatever!   She is an 8.5 pound Schnauzer and 15 months old.   She is presently in dog obedience training.  She started  in January and is doing well.  Maybe she can race with the poodles....... and that's another story.  You might  find the story on Google.com, or I'll give it later.
My Texas hat won't keep me warm in Alaska !!!
This picture is at one of the check points or rest stops.  The very thick fur coat keeps the dogs cozy and warm on their bed of straw.  The straw is directly on the snow.   The climate is not injurous to the dogs as they are northern bred  and prepared for this weather.

A few pictures from my Album.
Left:       A musher preparing a bed of straw for his team.  One dog has already "crashed," on the straw.
Center:   Vet check.  The dogs have micro chips and are checked prior to the beginning of the race
and at check points along the way.  Very good records are kept on the health/condition
of the dogs.  There were approximtely 40 Veternarians who volunteered in 2002.
There are about the same number, this year.
Right:     This "resting dog" has on booties.  They all wear these booties to protect their feet from
sharp pieces of ice, or little ice balls that could get between the toes.

Bootie Brigade:   Ladies from all over the country, clubs, etc. spend a lot of time making booties for the                   mushers to carry.  They must carry 8 extra pair (I think that's right) per dog.
Dee Dee Jonrowe was a musher in 2002, and has  been battling Breast Cancer this year.  She will be in this year's race !!!
Dee Dee will be the key note speaker at the Teacher's Conference on Friday.  I have  a ticket to go hear her speak.
