32 JAMES TOMLINSON of Camp Point, Ill. was born in N. C. in 1800 and a traditional story relates that, when a small boy, he ran away from home and came to Cincinnati where he learned the shoemaker trade. He afterwards returned to N. C. and married Alice Bevil in 1822 by whom was born two sons and two daughters, when she died and he married Sarah Berry. He moved to Indiana prior to the others and located in Wayne County where two sons and two daughters were born. He laid out a town known as "Jimtown" but afterward named New Lisbon.

When Joseph Smith, the founder of the Latter Day Saints Church came along and held a series of meetings in that town, he sold all of his property and joined the church in its pilgrimage westward. After Joseph Smith was murdered at Nanvoo (?), Ill. and Brigham Young was made leader and it was decided to emigrate to Salt Lake, he concluded to take his family on a visit before taking such a long journey; so they visited his daughter Lydia Chase, then living at Camp Point, Ill. where he located and afterwards joined the Baptist church in which he was a minister for many years and one of his sons, Addison B. is still a minister. He died at Camp Point in 1880, aged 80. We remember meeting him when we were a small boy and knew him by his resemblance to his sister Mary Heath.
