The reason for leaving was always said to be due to problems with the Catholic church and something to do with land.  As a teenager Basilio left Tenerife, Canary Islands, an orphan, and joined his brother in Cuba. He learned to be a cigar maker and moved to Tampa where he met Rosa in 1890s.  Because of the order of his names,  we know that Basilio's father's name was Gonzalez, and his mother's Castillo.
