Gingerbread Cookies

 

1  (½ cup) stick butter or shortening

½ cup granulated sugar

½ cup molasses

1 large egg

2 cups all purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground ginger

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

 

Beat butter with sugar and molasses. Mix in egg. Sift dry ingredients and to wet mixture. Mix well. Chill in refrigerator 2 hours.

 

Heat oven to 350*

 

 Roll out a portion of the sough ¼ inch thick on lightly floured board. Chill remaining dough. Cut with cookie cutter, place on greased baking sheets.  Bake 8 to 10 minutes. Cool. Decorate if desired.
