Began playing the guitar at the age of 17 while at college. Initially inspired by Bob Dylan[1] and began writing my own songs at the same time as learning to play the guitar. Also at this time listened to the music of Neil Young[2] another great songwriter. Eventually came across the music of Ry Cooder[3] who was to become my biggest inspiration as far as guitar playing goes. This led me to spend hours trying to master slide guitar and learning alternate tunings which opened up a whole new world of sounds and techniques. Over the years I have played many different guitars and now have a small collection of seven acoustics[4] and three electrics[5] all these guitars were bought from the famous (and now sadly closed) Potter's Music Shop in Richmond run by Gerry and Ann Southard. This shop had been around for over thirty years and was frequented by many a famous name over the years, including Peter Green[6], Eric Clapton[7], Martin Simpson[8], Elvis Costello[9] and Pete Townshend[10] to name but a few. |
