<< Chapter 2: An awaiting samurai >>

< description: at the cemetery >
Yoh: Um…
Yoh: White cloud. Blue sky. Green grass.
Yoh: Being in the nature is really comfortable
Manta: This is natural…

Manta: NOT THAT I KNOW OF!!
< Seeing a bunch of spirits in different activities >
Yoh: Get use to it, Manta. Shaman has to live with spirits anyway

< title page Chapter 2: an awaiting samurai >

Manta: Even you are a person who lives with spirit, why do you have to come to Tokyo?
Yoh: I just want to have more friends.
Manta: More friends?
Yoh: You already saw it. Shaman's ability depends on strength of the chosen spirits.
Yoh: If you can find more capable spirits, you will have more help in various situations and will be accepted as a real shaman.

Manta: So you come to Tokyo to become a real shaman?
Yoh: Here has a lot of spirits worth to try collecting
Yoh: Spirits of the brave, who cannot let it go.
Manta : Yoh looks so mature today.
Yoh: Therefore, let's be friend, Amidamaru!
Manta < shouting >: That's too quick!!

Amidamaru: Be friend… with me?
Yoh: I am impressed by your sword skill.
Amidamaru: No.
< yoh feels rejected >
Amidamaru: Last time we connected our spirits, but it did not mean that I would like to help you. I have no intention of leaving here.
Yoh: Don't be cruel.
Manta: Ah… arh!
< manta drags Yoh >
Manta: Yoh, come with me!
Yoh: Oh?

Manta < shouting >: Hey, why do you want that samurai?
Yoh: Why?
Manta < shouting >: You ask me!
Manta: That samurai's nickname is 'ogre' OK? Moreover, he is a renegade
Manta: He must have killed hundreds. You still want that kind of scary person to be your friend?
Yoh: Um, Ogre?
Manta: Yeah. You'd rather change your mind.
Yoh: He must be really good. I must befriend with him.
Manta < screaming >: You never listen to me.
Yoh: Listen, he is not a bad person. When we connect, I can feel the warmth of his heart.
Manta: Warmth?

< back at cemetery >
Ghost1: Hey, Mr. Amidamaru, why do you reject that boy's offer?
Amidamaru: It's none of your business.
Ghost1: What a waste. If only I had a body, I could wreck some serious havoc.
Amidamaru: I do not like fighting. I don't want to die fighting with a bear like yo
Ghost1: Duh, such a word from an ogre.
Amidamaru: Don't bother me. I am waiting for someone.

< description : the next day >
< sign: Samurai information center >
Yoh: Oh! Here has such a thing.
Yoh: Harusame [Spring rain] sword. The sword that Amidamaru used 600 years ago.
Manta: Let's go back. And how do you know about that?
Yoh: You are great. Thanks for bringing me here. Now I start to understand a lot of thing.
Manta: I just come to do some researches. But what do you mean 'understand'?
Yoh: When I look at this sword…

< A spirit appears >
Yoh: I can ask information from this guy
Manta < screaming >: Ah~~~.
Manta: Who are you?
Mosuke: I, I am a sword smith named Mosuke. Who are you all? Why don't you feel shock when you see me?

Manta < thinking >: A sword smith?
Yoh: We have a reason not to. Anyway, you have a minute to talk?
Mosuke: Time? Sure, I have to be in this sword anyway. I have nothing to do for 600 years already.
Manta: 600 years?
Yoh: So you must know the owner of this sword.
Mosuke: More than knowing. I kill him.
Yoh: !
Manta < shouting >: You? Kill that ogre?
Mosuke: He isn't a monster.
Manta: !?
Mosuke: Why do I and him relate to this sword?

Mosuke: Because we are best friend.
< flashback, 600 years ago >
Daimyo*(1): Ho, ho, interesting. You ronin*(2) and this Harusame sword are so good that I should patron you?
Amidamaru: Yes, Milord. Because I am a great sword man.
Mosuke: And, I am a great sword smith.
Both: We train ourselves to become better than the other.

Daimyo: Ho, ho, I always admire a great sword. You are under my patron now.
Both: !!
< description: In a place where a great war divide the country in two. In this deadly world, only here that food can be provided >
Mosuke: At last, Amidamaru, we are his clients!
Amidamaru: Who're gonna think that you will give your sword to Daimyo?
Mosuke: Now I will build a good sword for you, so that you can be a great warlord for our Daimyo.
Amidamaru: Um.
Both: We can say goodbye to that stinking old world.

< Mosuke: But anywhere in hell is still hell >
Amidamaru < shouting >: You want me to kill Mosuke?
Daimyo: Don't say it too loud, Amidamaru.
Amidamaru: But why…
Daimyo: The mysterious ray that this sword emits, it just intoxicates people. Such beauty created by survivor of the war. A great thing should exist only one. How can I let the world have more of this sword?
Daimyo: Ho, ho. I will let you take care of him.
Amidamaru: Ah…

< Mosuke place >
Mosuke: How can this happen!
Mosuke: Damn! We come this far… what should we do?
Amidamaru: You run away now.
Mosuke: What about you? Let's run away together so nobody will get hurt.
Amidamaru: No. I can't run away and be a renegade. I can't kill you either. The only way is to accept punishment for letting you away.
Mosuke: Amidamaru. I understand.

< Mosuke starts to cry >
Mosuke: I will run away tomorrow.
Amidamaru: ?
Mosuke: Can you lend me your Harusame tonight?
Mosuke: We may never meet again. I will create an ultimate sword for you. An ultimate Harusame, a better sword than the one that idiot has.
Amidamaru: Mosuke… OK, I will wait until tomorrow evening.
Mosuke: I promise
< back to the present >
Manta: Promise?
Mosuke: But someone saw that

< past again >
Soldier1: Ami chan?*(3) What are you doing here?
Soldier2: Don't be too serious
Soldier1: Let me tell you something. The person you are waiting for cannot come. We have already taken care of him for you.
Amidamaru: Shut up. I won't go anywhere. This is a promise.

Mosuke: Since then, he becomes a legend of a cruel monster. Amidamaru, without Harusame, fought until his death.
Mosuke: He was accused to be an ogre because of me. I killed him because I could not give him Harusame. I just couldn't rest in peace.
Yoh: That's it?
Mosuke: What!?
Yoh: Then go to give it to him.
Mosuke: What… did you just say?

Manta: Actually he is a good man.
Mosuke: !
Manta < crying >: He waits for you there, all along.
Mosuke < crying >: No… no way. He has waited for me?
Yoh: You two are equally dumb. Why don't you go to see him
Mosuke < jelly mode >: Ah~ it's not that easy.
Mosuke: I can just go to apologize him. Now Harusame is almost broken. I can't even carry it there.
Yoh: You can. I will lend you my body. Because I …

Yoh: am a shaman.
< Yoh turns Mosuke to a spirit ball >
Manta: Like he did to Amidamaru last time.
Mosuke < shocking >: What is shaman?
Yoh: A link between two worlds
Yoh: Combine Mosuke!
< Mosuke getting into Yoh's body >

Mosuke: What is this? I am inside his body…
Manta < thinking >: What now?
Yoh: Hey kiddo. Bring me to ironsmith shop.

< Cemetery >
Yoh: "Sorry to keep you wait." That's what he asks me to tell you.
Manta: Mr. Mosuke cannot come because he has already gone to the afterlife.
Amidamaru: All this because of you? This kind of craftsmanship only belongs to him. That idiot!
Amidamaru: Waiting 600 years just to give this sword to me.

Amidamaru: I want to follow him and beat him up…
Amidamaru: But it seems to be too early for me.
< Manta's description: Therefore, Amidamaru becomes Yoh's friend and helper. So do I. PS. There is a small column in newspaper reporting Harusame emitting some light. It is called "Miracle of Harusame" - Manta. >

Translation Note:

*(1) Daimyo is the ruler of a prefecture. Feudalism in Japan is, I think, somewhat similar to the Western one. Each warlord will be autonomous in his own prefecture, even being able to start a war between neighboring prefecture without central government sanction. But I think this system is kinda gone after Tokukawa Ieyatsu unites the land (but it is a different story, anyone who are interested in this should go read 'Kagemusha,' a comic by Hara Tetsuo)
*(2) Ronin is, by definition, a samurai without a master. Most of them are mercenaries for hire, or samurai whose patron was killed in war. They are considered to have no honor in bushido system. Patroning is common among ronin who wants to become honorable samurai.
*(3) Not translating wrong here, it really is 'chan' (prefix for a girl). I guess it is meant to be in a sarcasm way, or meaning that you are a sissy.
