http://www.musicweb.uk.net/warkarts/Czech2001/index.html The Czechoslovak Independent Brigade
Group was based in and around Leamington from October 1940 until May 1942, and the memory
of their presence lives on. Promoted by Warwick Arts Society, this festival presented a
wide range of clasical Czech music from established Czech and British performers. Details
of the programme can be found at the web site shown above. There were also several events
concerning the stay of the Brigade in the town. |

The Beskydy Dancers performed two short programmes as a 'sideshow' on the afternoon of the bank holiday Monday, in an area beside the Pump Rooms at the edge of a park. In conversation a veteran of the brigade pointed to the bandstand in the park and told us that the Brigade band played there when they were in Leamington. |
| It was a warm afternoon, but our efforts were appreciated by the crowd that gathered. After we finished a 'replenishment of liquids' by a visit to the pub was considered appropriate. Most of the dancers retired to a hostelry with a good supply of 'Velkopopovický Kozel', while the musicians and one or two others lost their way a little and settled for one with 'Budvar'. A fitting end to the afternoon! | ![]() |
