Sex and cancers

It is interesting therefore how many people do not know about the human papilloma virus (HPV), a family of viruses that infects the cervix, vagina and rectum and which, if undetected or untreated, may eventually lead to cervical cancer and much less often penile, anal, mouth and throat cancer.
There are many types or strains of this virus and type 16 and 18 cause about 70 per cent of cervical cancers. In the USA, HPV is considered the most common sexually-transmitted infection. Six million people are newly infected each year and about 20 million people are currently infected.
Women who become sexually active at a very young age or who have had many sexual partners have the highest risk of being infected with high risk strains of HPV. There is however a prolonged incubation period of more than 10 years from HPV infection progressing through pre-cancerous to invasive cervical cancer. There is also some evidence that smoking increases the risk of cervical cancer if you are infected with high risk strains of HPV.
Fortunately, cervical smear tests (often called Pap smears) can detect pre-(or early) cancerous changes before invasive cancer develops. "Pap" refers to Dr George Papanicolaou of Cornell University, New York, USA, who discovered the smear technique. If caught early, the treatment of pre-cancerous changes in anal xondemand the cervix can be highly successful. The problem can be removed by a simple surgical procedure. That is the good news.
The bad news is that (as if they do not have enough problems) HIV-positive women compared to HIV-negative women are more girls painful anal insertions likely to be infected with HPV, to have a greater number of different types of HPV at the same time and to develop anal slut cancer as a result of their infection. As one third of all HIV-positive women are infected with HPV and since 1993, cervical cancer has been classified as an AIDS-defining illness.

Many lives are saved this way.
Now, the incidence of oral and anal carcinomas is also significantly increased in HIV/AIDS patients compared to the general population. In very recent studies by researchers at Johns Hopkins University of Baltimore, USA, it was found that cases of oral cancer caused by HPV transmitted during oral sexual practices appeared to have increased drastically over the past 30 mom does anal years and is related to changes in people's sexual behaviour over this period. Naturally, this proposal, although scientifically rational, has not surprisingly sparked debate. On the other hand, routine vaccination of boys is thought not to be cost-effective
Some describe the vaccine as a sex vaccine and are concerned that it will encourage promiscuity.
