1796. Pierre II LEMIEUX-Ch.19-4

According to research made by Jacques Lemieux, if the Lemieux family has a host
of descendants in North America, it also has many in France, especially at
Rouen in Mormandy. Also in the northeast tip of Cotentin in the region of the
"Val de Saire" which extends through the lands and hamlets of Canteloup. Some
Lemieux in this region have kin known to go back to 1384.

Two Lemieux brothers came to Canada: Pierre and Gabriel. They were the sons of
Pierre and of Louis, son of Pierre, son of Gilles, and of Marie Luguen. They
both knew the secrets of barrel-making. Pierre and Gabriel were both married
in New France; they left descendants in that still-developing country. This
record is of Pierre.

Pierre was baptised on 26 Ocxt 1616, at the baptismal font of Saint-Michel in
Rouen, Godparents, Jean Luguen and Isabeau Lemieux. His parents had been
married in the same parish on 27 June 1614. Pierre was the younger brother of
Jean Lemieux, baptized on l October 1615. He must have attended school as he
know how to write his name and to count. He also learned the trade of cooper.
Probably inn 1638 he is said to have departed on a ship leaving for New France.
On 28 April 1639 he was reported to be in New France as a master valet. About
1643 he had returned to LaRochelle and was hired for a 3-year period as a Cooper
by Antoine Cheffault de la Reynardiere, to come to Canada.

The marriage contract of Pierre & Marie Besnard/Benard (Denis & Marie Michelet)
was executed at the LeCoustre Registry at Beaupre, 17 Aug 1647. Among Guests at
the signing, was Gabriel Lemieux, half-brother on his mother's side. (Gabriel
was the son, born in Rouen in 1626 to Louis Lemieux, uncle of our Pierre, and
Marie Luguen, who married both brothers.)
