California's Route 80

380. Route 80 is from: (a) Route 101 near Division Street in San Francisco to Route 280 near First Street in San Francisco. (b) Route 280 near First Street in San Francisco to the Nevada state line near Verdi, Nevada, passing near Oakland, via Albany, via Sacramento, passing near Roseville, via Auburn, via Emigrant Gap, via Truckee and via the Truckee River Canyon. 380.3. There will be increased motor vehicle traffic on San Pablo Avenue in the County of Contra Costa and the Cities of El Cerrito, Richmond, San Pablo, Pinole, and Hercules because traffic will be detoured onto San Pablo Avenue during construction work on State Route 80 to convert the existing shoulder to additional traffic lanes. Because of the increased traffic caused by the detour, the department may pay annually to that county and each of those cities the added costs of maintenance and operation of San Pablo Avenue. This section shall remain in effect only until the department certifies to the Secretary of State that construction is complete on the project on State Route 80 in Contra Costa County to convert the existing shoulder to additional traffic lanes, and as of the date of that certification is repealed. 380.4. (a) The Legislature finds and declares that there will be increased traffic on San Pablo Avenue in the Cities of Richmond, San Pablo, Pinole, Hercules, and El Cerrito, and other portions of San Pablo Avenue in the County of Contra Costa by motor vehicles detoured because of construction work on Route 80 in Contra Costa County. (b) It is the intent of the Legislature in enacting this section that the state share in the cost of maintaining and operating San Pablo Avenue to the extent that it is used as an alternative to Route 80 during construction. It is the further intent of the Legislature that the department pay up to the amount authorized in this section to the County of Contra Costa and to each city specified in subdivision (a). (c) During the period of construction, the department may pay annually to the County of Contra Costa and to each of the cities specified in subdivision (a) for the added costs of maintenance and operation of San Pablo Avenue. The total obligation of the department for this purpose shall not exceed seventy-five thousand dollars ($75,000) per year, adjusted for inflation, as reflected by a change in a national or regional index that measures the rate of inflation, as determined by the department. (d) This section shall remain in effect only until the commission certifies to the Secretary of State that construction is complete on the project on Route 80 in Contra Costa County to convert the existing shoulder to additional traffic lanes, and as of the date of that certification is repealed. Understand San Pablo Avenue, if you didn't know, is Route 123. F&E System Entire route. Status Signed as an Interstate highway. Freeway Entire route. Portion (a) of the route is called the James Lick Skyway. The bridge that takes the route across the bay is the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The portion from Route 880 in Oakland to the Carquinez Bridge near Vallejo is called the Eastshore Freeway. History Route 80 is almost entirely parallel with what used to be U.S. Route 40. For more insight on the matter, consult with Daniel Faigin's page or with Gary Cooper's Historical U.S. Highways page. Scenic Route 80 from: (a) Route 280 near First Street in San Francisco to Route 61 in Oakland. (b) Route 20 near Emigrant Gap to the Nevada state line near Verdi, Nevada. Points of Interest At Route 37 in Vallejo is Marine World Africa USA. In Newcastle, right at Route 193, is the Placer County Visitor Information Center. It's open 24 hours a day. Right in Auburn, and then following Route 49 southward is Auburn State Recreational Area. Hiking trails are quite prominent in this park. There are also five "primitive" campgrounds you can choose from, although some of them may be closed for the winter. The story behind this park was that dam builders wanted to build a dam on the American River, which now forks through the park. But a Montana dam which was similar design collapsed. As a result, and thanks to early conservationists, the project was halted, although it's still alive. For more information, visit the California State Parks Page or call (916)885-4527. Before you enter Truckee, you can also visit the Donner Memorial State Park. The park includes the Emigrant Trail Museum, which has exhibits on the building of the Central Pacific Railroad and the tale of the Donner Party, which was snowbound here in the winter of 1846-47. Boating and fishing in Donner Lake is allowed. For more info, call (916)587-3841. Notes Could somebody please tell me why is this route discontinuous? The route splits into two at the very same point ("Route 280 near First Street in San Francisco"). It's odd that the portion of Route 80 on the Bay Bridge is considered scenic. Personally, I don't see anything scenic about it. Rest areas on Route 80 are found (heading eastbound) north of Route 37, nine miles north of Colfax (Route 174), and near Donner Lake. Winter reports have conveyed that the Sierra Nevada portion of the route can be troublesome in that time of year, so do be careful during the wintertime. In fact, you might want to bring chains if you plan to drive then. California State Highways (Pull-down) California State Highways (Tables) The Main Page
