Freeway Entire route. History Route 40 in general, even past the state line, replaced the old U.S. Route 66. Route 66 actually went along on the National Trails Hwy and then on to Goffs Rd, roadside companions of Route 40. Before 1964, Route 40 was used to designate nowaday Route 80 from San Francisco to the Nevada state line. It was signed as a U.S. Highway. In the 1970 California Streets and Highways Code there was an additional provision to Route 40, stating that Route 40 was from Route 15 to the Arizona state line near Topock, Arizona via Needles, together with an extension from a point on such Route 40 near Needles easterly by the most direct and practicable route to the Arizona-California line at the Colorado River, including a bridge over and across said river, to be constructed, owned, operated, and maintained jointly with the State of Arizona. Route 58 from Route 5 to Route 40 via Bakersfield and the Tehachapi Pass was twice submitted for Interstate approval, once in 1956 and the other in 1968. In both instances it was not approved. Scenic Route 40 from Barstow to Needles. [CS&HC Sec. 263.4] Notes There's a rest area thirty miles east of Barstow. Another one is west of Goffs Road, 36 miles west of Needles.
