California's Route 271571. Route 271 is from Route 101 near Cummings to Route 101 near the Humboldt-Mendocino county line.
Along the way, past Route 1 in Leggett, is the Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area. The park offers camping, picnicking, hiking, swimming, and fishing, on the south fork of the Eel River. In the park, only one redwood stands where logging was once prevalent; it's 225 feet tall and thirteen feet in diameter (about 40 feet in circumference). Redwood groves in the park, have many kinds of ferns, including sword, lady, western bracken, woodwardia, gold-black maidenhair, and licorice. At times the Eel River floods during heavy rainfall, so the river bottom and swimming floors change each year. Hikers should be in good condition when traveling on the trails. There are three campgrounds--Rock Creek, Hickey, and Redwood--each with 35, 64, and 63 campsites. Also along the way is the Smithe Woods State Reserve. There you can find some standing old-growth redwoods and a 60-foot waterfall. Trails lead to the waterfall andf to the Eel River. It also offers picnicking and swimming.
