California's Route 270

570. Route 270 is from Route 395 south of Bridgeport to Bodie State Historic Park. Points of Interest As mentioned, Route 270 will take you to Bodie State Historic Park. Now, Bodie--or so the remains of Bodie--was once a booming prospecting town. History has it that Waterman S. Body discovered gold there in 1859. The change in spelling has been usually blamed on an illiterate sign painter, but the citizens deliberately changed it so that people would pronounce it right (BO-dee). A museum is open in summer and sometimes in the spring and fall weekends. Guided tours are given of the Standard Mill (a gold stamp mill) which is otherwise closed to the public. Summer is the best time to visit Bodie. It is also strongly suggested for people not to smoke in Bodie, since the buildings are everpresently threatened with fires.
