Route 242 must have once been Route 24. If you get on Route 680 between these two routes from the surrounding places, you might see signs that lead to the onramp. They seem to have a gap to the right with a squared blotch that might have once held the Route 24 marker. Within Route 24 runs the ever-so-famous BART Train. To get on it, you can exit in La Fayette or Orinda, where you'll find a station and, here's the biggie, PARKING!!! Heading westward to Oakland, you'll soon enter the Caldecott Tunnel. (Heading eastbound, it's called "Caldecott Tunnels" since there are two tunnels serving that direction.) Try counting down the well-lit number boxes on the side of the tunnel. When it gets to "1", you should be exiting the tunnel in two seconds. If you don't see the end when you see this box as you head west, you are not in the Caldecott Tunnel! Really! This is one of those freeways with what I call the "disco look". In this case, the signs are backed up by a peach-colored board with shadowing vertical stripes. The post holding these signs over the freeway are also peach-colored. The overpass guard rails are made of one or two horizontal bars of steel that are held by yet other thinner vertical bars. This look was fairly prevalent in freeways that were in full swing in the late '70s, hence I call it the "disco look".
