    Notes

For those who are jumpy as to getting to the Silverado Trail from Route 29 northward before getting into Napa, Route 221 is the route of choice.

Route 221's purpose largely lies on the adjacent Napa State Hospital. Opened on November 15, 1875 as an overflow site for the Stockton Asylum, the hospital follows "the principles of Biopsychosocial Rehabilitation (BPSR) which utilizes assessments from the interdisciplinary team, clients, and appropriate community agency representatives." The original building boasts of Gothic architecture. Until the 1960s, the hospital also had a dairy farm for self-sustinance, but now it has been developed into Napa Valley College, Kennedy Park and Skyline Wilderness Park.
