Route 210 is from:
Part (a) signed as an Interstate highway. Part (b) from Route 66 in La Verne to one Sierra Avenue in Rialto was opened to traffic on November 24, 2002. Portion (b) from Sierra Aveune to Route 215 in Muscoy is under construction and is expected to be completed by 2007. Portion (b) from Route 215 to Route 10 is signed as Route 30. It is expected that portion (b) will be signed in its entirety as an Interstate highway once construction is complete.
Entire route. [CS&HC Sec. 253.1]
Construted portions. It is called the "Foothill Freeway". It also forms part of a single continuous freeway that continues west of Pasadena as Route 134 and then on Route 101 as the Ventura Freeway.
Before 1964, Route 210 from Route 118 to Pasadena replaced what was once Signed Route 118 on Foothill Bl. A certain U.S. Route 99A followed this path before then. The portion from Route 134 in Pasadena to Route 66 parallels former U.S. Route 66, whereas the portion from Route 66 to Route 215 parallels the current Route 66. The first portion of the Foothill Freeway from Foothill Boulevard in La Caada Flintridge to Arroyo Boulevard in Pasadena was opened in 1957. The old segment was replaced with the current one in 1974, even though one of its grade separartions, ramps, mileage posts, and its original median remain. The segment from Arroyo Boulevard to Route 134 replaced Route 159 on Linda Vista Avenue (even though Route 159 was not deleted until long after), and the segment from Route 134 to Monrovia ultimately replaced Route 248 on Colorado Boulevard. The final segment (before the transfer of Route 30), from Osborne Avenue through the Verdugo Mountains to Lowell Avenue, was opened in 1981. The segment from Maclay Avenue in San Fernando to Arroyo Boulevard carries a unique look (which I coin "Discotheque", for a lack of a better name) which consists of a flat railing (often called Wyoming Rails) for bridge rails and painted box beam signs. (Another good example of this look can be found on Route 24.)
Route 210 from:
If you plan to visit Sylmar, you can lodge at the Good Nite Inn or the Super 8 Motel - Sylmar Magic Mountain, both located at Roxford Avenue. Also at Roxford Avenue is access to Olive View - UCLA Medical Center. At Hubbard Street is the Los Angeles Mission College. Route 210 follows the southern side of the Angeles and San Bernardino National Forests. Entrances are available at Osborne Street in Lake View Terrace, Angeles Crest Highway (Route 2) in La Caada Flintridge, Azusa Avenue (Route 39) in Azusa, Mountain Avenue in Upland, Waterman Avenue (Route 18) and Route 330. Also, at Osborne Street is the Wildlife Waystation, a non-profit animal sanctuary dedicated to rehabilitate widlife from here and around the world and to bring awareness about the plight of today's wildlife. Tours are available the first and third Sundays of each month. For tour reservations, call (818) 899-5201. There are numerous recreational activities along Route 210 as well. The first is Hansen Dam Aquatic Center, located on Osborne Street, south of Route 210 on Foothill Boulevard. Many activities are possible here, including biking, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, water sports, and wildlife viewing. A museum and visitor center hosts numerous educational programs. A restaurant and snack bar is also available. Pets are welcomed. You can even use kites, rockets, and R/C aircraft! For more information, call (818) 899-3779. The next opportunity at recreation is the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, located at the Irwindale Avenue exit, south on Irwindale, then west on Arrow Highway. The entrance will be to the right of Arrow. Recreational activities include sailing, swimming, fishing, biking, hiking, picnicking, and camping for youth groups. Other features of the park include a popular children's water play area (open during summer) and a tackle and bait shop right inside the park. A vehicle fee is charged. For more information, call (626) 334-1065. Note that for an urban freeway, several portions of Route 210 are considered scenic. This comes with good reason. The portion from Lake View Terrace to Pasadena is landscaped very well, while the rest of the route provides awe-inspiring views of the San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains, especially after the rains, when you can even see some snow on top of the peaks. Natural beauty is not limited to the route, however. Descanso Gardens is located at Angeles Crest Highway (Route 2) in La Caada Flintridge. The Huntington Library, where the founder of the Pacific Electric Railway named Henry Huntington once resided, is located at Allen Avenue in Pasadena. The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Garden is located at Baldwin Avenue. Each garden hosts numerous events and school programs, not to mention acres upon acres of eye- catching plant life all year round. Santa Anita Park is located at the Baldwin Avenue exit in Arcadia. Live horse racing takes place daily from December 26 to late April. Wagering facilities, closed-circuit TV simulcasts of racing and limited food services are provided during satellite wagering periods the remainder of the year. For a good night's sleep, you can lodge in the Residence Inn Pasadena-Arcadia or the Embassy Suites Hotel Arcadia-Pasadena, both accessible at Huntington Drive, west of the freeway. At the Buena Vista Street exit in Duarte is the City of Hope National Medical Center. It is one of the most important medical research institues in the country, dedicated to the prevention and cure of cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and other life-threatening diseases. Numerous institutes and specialty departments are located within this all-inclusive institute. Many health-related events are held here on a regular basis. Citrus College, a two-year public college, is located at Citrus Avenue, north of the freeway. Next to it is the Azusa Pacific University. One of the major attractions along Route 210 is the Los Angeles County Fairplex. Numerous events are held here every year, including horseracing, computer fairs, and (until quite recently) gun shows! The Los Angeles County Fair, held every September, is the centerpiece event of the site. Also at the Fairplex is the Pomona Raceway. It was opened in 1950 as a safe and contained place for street racing. Today, the quarter-mile dragstrip hosts numerous NHRA-promoted races in front of a 40,000-seat grandstand. To access the Fairplex, exit at Fruit Street and head south; the street becomes White Avenue. However, if you're coming from the west, it is better to exit at Foothill Boulevard (Route 66), head east, and make a right on White Avenue. The Claremont Colleges are made of five different colleges clustered into a single area: Claremont McKenna College, Pomona College, Harvey Mudd College, Pitzer College, and Scripps College. To reach the Claremont Colleges, exit on Baseline Road, head west on Baseline, make a left on Padua, and continue onto Claremont Boulevard.
Carpool lanes exist from Route 134 to Sierra Avenue. The carpool lanes continue from Route 134 and are open all day and in both directions.
The following are from former Route 30:
Route 210 passes through the communities of Sylmar, Lake View Terrace, Sunland, and Tujunga in Los Angeles. Its control city west of Route 134 is San Fernando. The route passes through La Crescenta and the cities of La Caada Flintridge, Pasadena, Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale, Azusa, Glendora, San Dimas, Claremont, La Verne, Upland, Rancho Cucamonga, Rialto, and Fontana. Portion (b) from Route 215 to Route 10 currently goes through San Bernardino and Highland, and approaches the Redlands. Portions of Route 210 at Routes 118 and 2 were used to film the TV series "CHiPs". The portion between Routes 57 and 66 were used to film the made-for-TV movie "CHiPs 99". The ramp that goes from Route 57 north to Route 210 west is known as the "Glendora Curve". The interchange of Routes 210 and 57 is known as the "Police Officer Louie Pompei Memorial Interchange", named after the slain Glendora Police officer, Mansfield University graduate, physical fitness buff, and all-around outgoing and respected fellow of his community of Glendora. The Metro Gold Line runs along the middle of Route 210 from Lake Avenue to Madre Street. The stations of this light-rail line are accessible at Lake Avenue, Allen Avenue, and Madre Street. The Sierra Madre Villa station at Madre Street has a Park-and-Ride structure with 1,000 spaces. The Gold Line continues south from Pasadena through South Pasadena, Highland Park, and Chinatown, to Union Station in Los Angeles, where it connects to the rest of Metro Rail via the Red Line. A future extension from Union Station to East Los Angeles, which parallels Route 60 and a deleted portion of Route 72, is scheduled to open in 2008, while an extension from Pasadena to Claremont, which would parallel Route 210, is planned. Note also that there is no exit for Euclid Avenue (Route 83). To reach it, you must exit at either Mountain Avenue or Campus Avenue in Upland. As a final note, Route 210 is the state highway I live nearest. I live in Tujunga and am a graduate of Verdugo Hills High School. Go Dons!
