California's Route 108

Route 108 is from:

  • (a) Route 5 near Crows Landing to Route 99.
  • (b) Route 132 in Modesto to Route 120 in Oakdale.
  • (c) Route 120 near Yosemite Junction to Route 49 south of Jamestown.
  • (d) Route 49 to Route 395 via the vicinity of Sonora and Long Barn. [CS&HC Sec. 408]

    Status

    Part (a) is unconstructed. Crows Landing Road closely parallels this routing.

    Give your diet a break and visit the Hershey's Chocolate Company, which features Hershey's confections, souvenirs and freshly baked cookies! The visitors' center is at 120 Sierra Avenue in Oakdale. Go ahead and splurge!

    Truck Routes and Terminal Access

  • Route 132 to McHenry Avenue in Modesto: California Legal (40-foot KPRA).
  • McHenry Avenue to Herring Creek Lane in Strawberry - 1.1 miles east of Pinecrest: Terminal Access.
  • Herring Creek Lane to U.S. Marine Corps Training Center, 3.7 miles west of Route 395: The KPRA advised for the route is less than 30 feet. Snow not plowed. Steep grades up to 26%, sharp curves and narrow road width. Trailers can get stuck. Warning signs on both sides of Sonora Pass read: "Steep grades ahead, not advised for trucks," and "26% grade." Training center is the only place to turn around.
  • U.S. Marine Corps Training Center to Route 395: Terminal Access.

    Notes

    This route may get snowed over in the winter; sometimes, it may even be closed. Snow chains are required when driving on Route 108, from several miles east of Route 132 to Route 395, during wintertime.

    Route 108 crosses the Sonora Pass. At 9,624 feet, it is the second highest pass in the State Highway System.
