Matthew's Gospel was written around A.D. 70-85. Mark's Gospel was written around A.D. 65-70. Luke's Gospel was written around A.D. 70-85. John's Gospel was written around A.D. 90-100.
Matthew's Gospel was written for Jewish Christians. Mark's Gospel was written for Gentile Christians. Luke's Gospel was written for Christians of Greek background. John's Gospel was written for Christians of all backgrounds.
Matthew's Gospel was written in Syria(Antioch). Mark's Gospel was written around in Rome. Luke's Gospel was written around in Greece. John's Gospel was written around in Ephesus(Asia Minor).
The Gospel of Matthew's image of Jesus was Jesus as Teacher. The Gospel of Mark's image of Jesus was Jesus as the Suffering Servant. The Gospel of Luke's image of Jesus was Jesus as the Compassionate One. The Gospel of John's image of Jesus was Jesus as God Incarnate.
The winged man is a symbol of Matthew because he began his gospel with a genealogy of Jesus. The winged lion is a symbol of Mark because of his clear proclamation of Jesus' Resurrection. The winged ox is a symbol of Luke because of his emphasis on Jesus' sacrificial atonement. The eagle is a symbol of John because of his "soaring" witness to Jesus' divine nature.
