Journal 2

  1. What is the one key idea of this chapter?
  2. The main idea of this chapter is to increase our ability to understand how our world is telling us to act and how Jesus is telling us to act. The chapter showed that God is calling everyone to help; he has a plan for everyone. Through reading the chapter I was shown what Palestine was like during the time of Jesus and the early Church. The chapter contained facts about the political and social environment of Palestine as well as other religious groups of this time and their beliefs.

  3. Write about two major ideas you want to remember. Write a short paragraph on each clearly stating the idea and then telling why you want to remember it.
  4. I want to remember Dorothy Day because she was able to go out and help so many people. I sometimes struggle with how to help the poor, or even if I should. Dorothy is a good model for me. When she was young she had troubles. But Dorothy came to understand that love of God becomes love of neighbor. I want to have this love of neighbor. Even if it is for some bum on the street.

I want to remember the several schools of philosophy that were talked about in this chapter. I think that a good way to base your life is by living according to Epicureanism with the combination of stoicism. Things in life are good and should be enjoyed but to an extent. The Epicureans did not know when to stop. I like the good things life has to offer but I like most other people can sometimes get carried away.

  5. One image that captures the chapter for you
  6. One significant question you have from this chapter. It can be intellectual or personal. Just write out the question.
  7. Does God want parents to give their money to the church, poor, or other charities or would God want these parents to save their money to afford the best education for their children?

This is a very difficult question but I think that an answer might be:

The parents should save the money for the childrens education. When the children grow up and become successful they should remember where they came from and they will give back to the community. In the mean time the whole family can donate time instead of money to the church, poor, or other charities.

No matter what any higher education can be afforded by almost anyone. My father went to a high school equalivent to SLUH, a six year medical program, and addition medical school. He paid for all of this. His parents could not spend a dime on his education because they could not afford to even with working multiple jobs. So my father supported himself. He has worked himself up the ladder. Now he has worked at one of greatest hospital in the U.S., Mayo Clinic and been asked to work at others as well.

  8. Do one of the "Living the Gospel" question at the end of the chapter, page 40. Write out the question and then answer it well.
  9. Write an essay expressing the values in our society that Christains are challenged to reject.

There are many values in our society today that the Christians are challenged to reject. We are called to care for everyone among us as if they were part of our own family. This means treating the bum on the street with kindness and respect.

The injustice that I am very concern with is malnutrition. It pains me greatly to see people, especially kids my age or my brothers, in need of food. Last Friday my dad and I stopped at Hardies to get breakfast before class. There was an 35 or so year old man in front of us. The only money he had was change. He ordered a 40-cent biscuit, which was his breakfast and maybe lunch. Now most of us that are at SLUH could have a huge breakfast any day with out thinking twice about it. But do we ever think about those around us that cannot? Any of us could be in his position if things took a turn for the worst.

My family does some neat projects to help impoverish people. We have signed up to collect donations from St. Louis Bread Co. We go to St. Louis Bread Co. at closing time and pick up any leftovers of bread, pastries and bagels. There are usually five huge trash bags full of food. We then take this to a shelter the next day. This is a simple, fun thing that anybody, catholic or not, can do to help people in need.
