Ship's Log
(Nov 8-13, 2004 Houston Texas)
Well sports fans we are still hard at work on La Trucha in
Houston. As Saturday finally rolled around thought it was appropriate
that I give an account of our work week, as much as I can recollect.
Monday, the 8th, Jim Sr., Jr. and I rode up to Humble,
North of Houston, with the boat's diesel generator - seems as though there
was a problem with the throttle's governor. We took it to a diesel
specialist who quickly had it back in running order. Biggest
revelation for me about diesel engines is the fact that the best starting
fluid you can use for any diesel is WD-40.
On the return trip we stopped at SAMS to provision the boat.
The three of us spent collectively about $315 on all your basic food groups,
laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning agents, canned
goods, etc. - your basic shopping spree for a long voyage at sea. We
then stopped at a WAL-MART super center to fill in the gaps with such items
as cheese, drinks, sun screen lotion, a new perk coffee pot, and so on.
Again the three of us divided the costs, which came to about $135.

Tuesday, I spent sometime working on the water maker again.
Problem, we think, was with the membranes. I got some terrible quotes for
replacing the two them: $519 a piece. So Jim called
around, got the price down to $215, which he ordered. It's a Pur
Water Maker, which was bought out by Katadyne, I was not a happy camper
going from one to another company, finding a change in part numbers, etc. After doing all the
phone tag calling, and basically rolling in confusion, I was happy to see
Jim find a good solution, as I was getting no where.
Wednesday we started working on the plumbing for the hot
water heater, and we expanded that the next day to replace the supply tubing
for the head and the sink. Wednesday, we also put the diesel generator
back again, and hooked her up. Jim checked her out, and this time she
was running just fine. Finished installing the hot water maker, and
the new plumbing on Thursday.

The
inside of 2J's Cafe and Grill Brazoria Texas
Friday we installed a pump for the air conditioner not far
from the main engine and ran some flex tubing all the way forward to the sea
strainer for the pump's water supply. Same day we also finished
changing the oil on the main engine, which on this Volvo gets changed out
every 500 hours.
So, as of right now we're getting close to moving out
through Freeport and headed to parts south.
