Ship's Log

(26-    May, Transit Tortugas, Fl to Houston, Tex )

Left Loggerhead Key yesterday 2:15p (Central Time as all the Dry Tortugas is in Central yet they observe Eastern).  Got the anchor up after spending the day swimming around African Reef, and walking the perimeter of the Dry Tortugas.  Saw 3 abandoned Cuban refugee boats constructed of sheet metal, fiberglass, and powered with  a Lombardini italian engine.  Volunteer on the key told me they had 17 refugees arrive the night before.  They burned their clothes and took them off to the promised land via Key West, then Miami.  Coastees were up in the lighthouse trying to prevent any other day time landing - we were told they hover about 12NM out and wait for the cover of darkness before making their approach.  Coast Guard had no radar as far as I could tell.

Anyway, since departure we've been motoring constantly.  Today is Friday, 27 May, about 1:30p and we still haven't seen any decent wind.  The sea is like glass.  Plenty of dolphins, birds and sea life to keep us company on this long transit.  Night watches are when things really drag.  We're spending about 3 hours on and 3 hours off.  Seems to work just fine.

Barometer is holding up just fine, but we're expecting some south or southeast winds tonight.  We'll have to add some fuel soon as we're about down to the 3/4 mark.
