The
Spartans beat the top-seeded
'Royd Rage 2:0 in Game A
of C Division Playoffs.
As the score indicates,
it was a very close-fought
game with great
goaltending on both sides
(congratulations to Eric
for the shutout!).
Neither team had any subs
so there were few excuses
and little whining after,
at least on that count.
Spartans
scored early in the first
and late in the third. 'Royd
Rage played well but just
couldn't put it in the
net. The 'Royd Rage had a
full squad of 9 players
with 5 forwards rotating
throughout the game and,
perhaps because of this,
it never quite gelled
into putting the puck in
the back of the net (except
once, they thought, but
the referees disagreed!).
Spartans played with real
energy and put up a great
defense that made for
relatively few scoring
opportunities from the
opposing side.
It was an
intense game and, thanks
to double-elimination,
the two teams may yet
meet again in the final! |

It’s
been an exciting and
eventful season of hockey
at Belmont Iceland. As
the regular season draws
to a close this week,
here is a summary of the
season highlights and
what to expect in the
playoffs, which begin
next week!
In the B division: SubZero
has clinched first place,
narrowly edging out
reigning champions CCCP.
Led by top scorers Dan
Hesselson,
newcomers Jack
Hutcheson and Brian
Huff, and
captain Jared
Ginsburg, SubZero
also has benefitted
from solid goaltending
from goals-against leader
Kane Ng.
CCCP power
forwards Doug
Gould and David
Dilworth, as
well as James
Marihart and
captain Mark
Allen, continue
to rack up the points.
Between them, players
from these 2 teams
currently account for 9
of the 12 in the top 10
points getters (the other
3 being 3rd place Ice
Ages’ captain Sean
Connolly and Dave
Verderosa, and Nor’Easters’
Bob Spiro),
and they seem destined to
face each other for the
Belmont Cup. But
don’t count out the
always dangerous Ice
Ages (Will their top
draft picks stay healthy?
Can Connolly catch Gould
and Hesselson in the
point’s race?) and Nor’Easters
(Will they field a
team? Will Captain Joe
Balan keep it
together?).
SubZero will face Nor’Easters
Wednesday April 9 at
9:30, while Ice Ages host
CCCP on Friday

first place! Even with a
win on Friday by Quickstix

Club and a loss by ‘Royd
Rage at the hands of
the Spartans, in
which case the 2 teams

identical 7-3-2 records,
first place will go to ‘Royd
Rage based on head
to head 3-0-1 record over
Quickstix. 3rd
place is still to be
determined: a Spartans
win and a Sam’s
Club loss will allow
the Spartans to
take 3rd place from Sam’s
Club. In the scoring
