Of Dreams?

This coming
week brings one of those yearly
sports crossover times. Baseball
season is gettin' going just as
the NHL playoffs are kicking off.
Historically these two pastimes
go together like oil and water,
but there have been cases where
players have successfully crossed
over between hockey and baseball.
One example,
close to home, would be former
ball player and current UCHP
skater, Larry Waxman. These days
he is tearing up forwards and
rippin' shots from the blue line,
but at one time Waxy ruled the
mound and truly was out standing
in a field. His crossover between
sports hasn't been a complete
success and this reporter has
taken notice. Sometimes on the
ice you can see Larry reverting
back to the glory days when he
was a pro level pitcher. He will
make a pass and then stand there
waiting for the puck to be tossed
back to him, kicking at the ice
while waiting. Larry also gets a
little confused with icing and
thinks the other team has just
hit a home run. The real giveaway
is the constant crotch grabbing
and fanny taps.
It is in
this spirit that I point you to a
fun little video. It was sent to
us from Bobby Hespler's dad and
legendary defenseman, Dave "The
Stick" Hespler. Dave is
retired now and living outside of
Winnipeg. Some of you might
remember Dave's short lived
string of food franchises in
Canada, Twig and A Biscuit, which
featured hot dogs on a stick and
chocolate covered English muffins.
Let's face it, Twig and A Biscuit
might have seemed brilliant at
the tavern over a pint, but in
action was kinda half thawed. I
do have to hand it though to ol'
Dave, the blade of the stick made
a great handle to grab onto while
eating the hot dog.

Goalies -
ya can't live without 'em, ya can't
understand them.
As we head
into the start of another season
of 4 on 4 hockey, we take a
moment to celebrate theses
individuals who guard the
threshold of victory and loss in
all your games. They have strange
habits, they wear lots of heavy
equipment, they like pucks shot
at them, and they have odd
nicknames. They are the Lords of
the Crease... the Princes of the
Pipes... they are Goalies..
