Hermits
best Biohazards 5-3

In
a spirited game that saw the lead change
several times, the formidable
Herman’s Hermits defeated the
Biohazards 5-3.
The
game was contested from the opening
faceoff, with the Hermits making a
determined charge into the Biohazards
zone, only to be turned aside by the hard
work of the ‘Hazard’s defenders.
The Biohazards regained their equilibrium
and three minutes later Simon Turcotte,
continuing his remarkable scoring streak,
scored on a power play occasioned by a
high-sticking call against Ben Lee. But a
few minutes later Lee redeemed himself,
evening the score with an unassisted
tally that followed a scramble for a
loose puck in the crease.
Doug
Gould opened the scoring in the 2nd
period, putting the Biohazards ahead 2-1,
but the lead was not to last. With the
normally mild-mannered Bill Colvin off
the ice for high-sticking (“It was a
senior moment,” said the 61 year-old
defender. “I thought the other guy
was trying to steal my Social Security
check.”), Victor Hui scored on the
ensuing power play. Another tally soon
thereafter by Ben Lee put the Hermits in
the lead.
The
remainder of the 2nd period saw a flurry
of penalties against the normally
gentlemanly Hermits. With a sustained
period of 1- and even 2-man advantages,
the Biohazards displayed power play as
flaccid as Bob Dole without Viagra,
failing to take advantage of a golden
opportunity to reverse the course of the
game.
In
the 3rd, a tally by Tom Borden put the
Hermits up 4-2. The Biohazards rallied,
and a goal by Doug Gould seemed to put
them back in contention. But
Borden’s second score two minutes
later, coming on a feed from Ben Lee,
iced the game for the Hermits.
Throughout
the game, Biohazards captain Don Ganem
tried to rally his troops by dispensing
hockey bromides distilled from reading
“Ice Hockey for Dummies” and
watching reruns of Miracle on Ice. The
team seemed at a loss to know what to do
with this information. “Play our
game!” said forward Pat Escaron.
“What the f@#k does that mean?”
