Biohazards
top 5-Beer Minimum, 7-2
By Don
Ganem
      Edmonton
native Doug Gould, already sporting a
playoff beard so he can be distinguished
from his near twin Dudley Chamberlin,
continued his blistering scoring pace,
netting 5 goals and propelling the
Biohazards to a 7-2 win over the Five
Beer Minimum in the initial meeting of
the two newly formed teams.
      The
Biohazards got off to a sluggish start,
giving up a goal early in the first
period to FBM captain Brian Sena, who
made his trademark Bobby-Orr style rush
from his own zone to score unassisted.
Sena grew up idolizing Orr in his native
village of Billerica, MA a
hardscrabble town known chiefly for its
shoe factories and baked ziti.
Every time Im in a tight spot,
he related after the game, I ask
myself: What would Bobby do?
      Goal-machine
Gould promptly evened the score on the
next shift with an unassisted goal, then
scored 3 more times in succession - twice
on heads-up feeds from linemate Pat
Escaron. FBM fought back gamely, but
never regained the lead. Sena lit the
lamp again late in the first, taking a
nice cross-ice pass from Paul
OConnor while Don Ganem looked on
listlessly, displaying no muscle tone or
evident cortical function. FBM continued
to plug gamely away, with two 2-on-1
breakaways led by hard-skating Boris
Amchislavsky but goalie Jonny
Blaze Martinez came up big
both times, as he has throughout the
season.
      The
rest of the Biohazards awoke from their
torpid state in the second period and
played more effectively as a unit from
then on. Gould scored once more in the 2nd,
while in the 3rd newcomer Austin Herman
scored on a 2-on-1 breakaway made
possible by the strong second effort of
Pat Escaron. In an event not seen since
the dawn of the Pleisotcene era, Don
Ganem also actually scored on a backhand
tip-in of a feed across the crease from
Doug Gould. Commenting on his first goal
since 7th grade, the Biohazards captain
noted that It was nice to finally
get one against guys who dont have
polio and credited all of his prior
coaches, 3 of whom have since committed
suicide; the fourth is thought to be
living under an assumed name in
Kazakhstan.
