Secret
Sauce and Biohazards Narrowly Avoid
Shootout

Fans
of the Belmont's C League were treated to
a game that had a bit of everything:
excellent individual efforts and
efficient teamwork; equal measures of
skill and grit; freaky bounces, dumb luck,
and more than one panicked scrum in the
crease. It would take nearly all of
overtime to decide the victor.
This
was the first game for new Secret Sauce
goaltender Michael Roeder, filling in for
recently-injured Chris Magnani.
Sauce
captain Tony Monroe opened the scoring in
the first period by running up the left
boards and flinging a shot at the net
which slipped behind Biohazards
goaltender Jonny Martinez. The Biohazards
would answer back a bit later on a Sauce
power play, with Simon Turcotte taking
advantage of a loose puck at the point
and scoring on a short-handed breakaway.
Both
teams were able to keep each other off
the scoreboard in the second period, due
to good team defense and excellent
goaltending when it mattered most.
Martinez was strong on the puck, covering
everything he could. Though Roeder did
not face as many shots during the second
period, he also put in a solid period
despite the occasional weird bounce or
deflection.
The
third period would see Tony Monroe strike
again for the Sauce, taking a pass from
Pat Weiher to score a wraparound goal.
About 6 minutes later, Lilly Radosevich,
one of the Biohazards' mercenaries for
the evening, knotted the score at two
goals apiece with a bobbing and weaving
breakaway of her own.
Overtime
proved to be just as intense as the rest
of the game. The best opportunity for
either team came when the Biohazards were
called for too many skaters late in the
extra frame. With only a few seconds left,
Tony Monroe's deflected shot found the
stick of Roland Gendron, who scored top
shelf to end the game.
After
his three-point night, Secret Sauce
Captain Tony Monroe said, "I'm not
having another game like that for quite a
while."
